Spider Question

Posts: 2,324
I'll be starting to use my new spider rig soon, and was wondering about using it in the lower setting with a CI grate on it for seering. Anyone know what size CI grate will fit on a Large egg with the spider?
thanks!
thanks!

@DaveRichardson
Here is some general info that may or may not be useful. I will share it nonetheless.
BGE recommends using a grid no larger than 13 inches on the spider in a large BGE. This happens to be the grid size in the small BGE. A few years back you could use a 15 inch grid from the medium. However BGE changed the taper on new large eggs and now recommends the 13" grid or smaller. With that said, if your BGE is 5 years old or older, the 15" will work perfect.
The Weber sear grate is advertised (or was at one time) as being 13 inches. However it is not. It's slightly smaller. This is of no concern to me as it serves my needs well. Here are a few pics of a 13 CI grid out of a small BGE and the Weber sear grate for comparison.

I really like the Weber sear grate. I don't even use the CI grid out of the small since getting the Weber. But I did want to point out that there was a slight size difference in case that was a concern for you. As you can see, the Weber is a little smaller.Location- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

CGS stopped selling a CI grate to fit the spider, so I bought the BGE 13 inch CI grate (part # CI13) from my dealer. It fits the small and the Mini-Max. The spider and CI grate gets used on every steak cooked on the egg ... in other words "much used."
Because the spider will fit in the large without touching the sides of the ring/bowl, I don't understand why BGE is recommending using a 13" or smaller grate. If it'll fit in the spider (slightly over 14" will fit) it shouldn't cause any interference problems

@ladeback69 it was my birthday present as well as some cast iron goods and a bag of Fogo lump to try.
Wife a actually wants steaks since she is trying to get higher protein while training for a couple of half marathons in the next few months. I figured this would be a good method. Plus the ability to Wok and roll with the spider. A mini or a minimax will be joining the family soon since camping will be a family thing starting this year.LBGE since 2014
