My new charcoal storage bin
1move
Posts: 516
I used to pour charcoal out of the bag and today finally had some time and spare parts to come up with a quick solution for a bin.
I took an old storage bin I had, some wire shelving and zip ties. Took all of 10 minutes to make and works like a charm. All the dust and small pieces stay at the bottom and it sorts itself out really well. Here is some photos.

Interesting. I have a lot of that type shelving laying around. Never thought of using it to screen charcoal with.
Good Job -
Great idea.
If, after using it for awhile, you find that the pieces that fall through are too big, you can shift the two pieces half the width of one space ... effectively cutting the spacing in half.

@Jeepster47 I was actually going to turn one 90 degrees so it creates a mesh but it was too small for my liking. I though about offsetting them but it looked too small again. So this works for now, I shall report back on it.
I just filled the bin with two bags of charcoal and it still worked wellXLBGE, MMBGE, CyberQ -
Okay ... you can shift slightly to "dial" it in to the correct size.

How do you get the charcoal out? By hand? Pick up and dump the box? Pick up the grate?Columbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013

@Chubbs I do it by hand and the ash pan. This allows me to pick the chunks I use depending on what I cook.XLBGE, MMBGE, CyberQ

I scoop with a chimney. What falls through the grate on it, is not used. I dump it into the garbage can to control Oder, put some in a plastic cup in the fridge, dump the rest in a compost pile prior to enzymes."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

I'm just a lazy idiot who dumps all the carbon I bought into the egg. I pay attention to the vent holes and have no problem. It all burns. Glad your set up works for you!Sandy Springs & Dawsonville Ga
