@Darby_Crenshaw I stir, dump, then light if ash is present. Maybe I should revisit my procedure?

And after sorting into each can, you should go through each stack and use your Dremel to trim off jagged edges of the lump to get a more uniform shape!   =)

Let me get this straight, if I understand you correctly, people do not do this?

Yes, some people actually use the lump just as it comes from the factory.

We all have our habits. Personally I am *thrilled* you are an engineer. There would be less airbag debacles, chipotle poisonings etc if people paid more attention to detail.

The only time I worry over lump arrangement is for high-temp pizza cooks.

I have never thought, for one second, those manufacturers, who have been doing this, very successfully for many years, would ever know as much as I. I will have to test this radical concept of which you speak. Perhaps, as recommended by the other pros on this thread, libations of the adult nature, must be used during this "dump and light" process I have read about. This could get interesting.

  • you need to work your way up to "dump and light"

first, try lighting the bag, and THEN dumping

This was attempted at Brisket Camp 2015:

It doesn't work as well as you think it might...

Seems it was a bit short on technique, but, long on adult beverages. I believe there is a mathematic principle that will define the proper ratio for adult beverages vs proper application of technique. I ain't doing it.

Wow!  So many good ideas. I prostrate (hey hey - don't go there...) myself at your feet, @YukonRon: I obviously have not given sufficient thought to the whole process, although the buckets are stored in an hermetically sealed locker.

And @jtcBoynton what bit should I use with the Dremel?  I get all tingly just thinking about how much more efficient the use of the lump will be when the pieces are shaped properly!
