While looking for ideas for my NY lucky & rich meal I ran across a site that explained the superstitions about the foods to eat on New Years.

Greens = color of money

BEPs & Fatback were about the only thing left for the non fighting southerners during the civil war to eat because the Union soldiers consider these foods pig slop and wouldn't eat it.  The southerners considered themselves lucky they still had food.

Pork is lucky because the pig alway routes forward when digging with their snout.

Silver scaled fish are lucky because the scales resemble silver coins.

Chicken is is unlucky because it moves backwards when scratching.

Cows are unlucky because of their slow movements

lobster are unlucky because they swim backwards.

Prolly boring but I thought it was interesting how the lucky foods got started.
