Cast iron grate

I just ordered a cast iron grate for my large BGE. What's the best way to season it. Also will it retain to much heat if I were to keep it on while smoking ribs or chicken? I'm new to the whole BGE thing.

  • Same as any CI, and you will season it often - searing will take the season off it. Used indirect I find it no different than the SS grid. Direct it does hold the heat mush better.

  • Is seasoning as easy as spraying cooking oil on it?

I have never seasoned mine, nothing sticks. I also have a Woo for my small. When cooking steaks and chops, I will sear first on the CI grate, then put the woo and standard grate on top and close down the vents to finish the cook raised semi-direct.  It is an easy and effective technique for me.

@MyEggBrotherI have been using a CI grate on both my Large and Small for the past 5 years.  If you cook on them often, you will not need to season them, cooking provides the seasoning.  I leave them in the Egg when not in use.  After heating up the Egg, I spray some water on them and scrub a bit.  They have stayed in great shape this way.

If you want to season when you first receive it, you can do it like any other CI pan.  Rub some oil on it,  heat at 40 minutes or so and repeat a couple of times after it cools.  However, I never did this.

    Just my own opinion....

I seasoned mine with some cooking oil when I first got it.  I hit with some spray before I put the food on and it has survived living outside just fine.
