I have tried about 10 different brands and from what I have tried, I agree Rockwood is by far the best.  Burns very clean with no strong smell.
    Morristown TN, LBGE and Mini-Max.
  • I used BGE lump for the first 8 months of my Egg.  Researching for best alternatives I learned Ozark & Rockwood were rated highly by many,  Ozark not being available I jumped on the bandwagon when I found Rockwood at Ace Hardware.  I have now used it extensively for cooks, low and slows, and Weber Kettle for  travels.  I do not find Rockwood comparable to BGE lump as it does not burn as hot (for searing) nor as long as BGE.  I've had to add as much as three times for 12-14 hour cooks vs one load for BGE lump.  I haven't used Royal Oak yet as I'm still using up 4 more bags of Rockwood but I'll try RO in the near future for comparison.  Also, I don't get as many small pieces or powder with Rockwood as in BGE bags I've bought but the extended use pays off for itself.

    Rockwood! End of discussion.
LBGE (still waitin' for my free T-Shirt), DIgiQ DX2 (In Blue, cause it's the fastest), Heavy Duty Kick Ash Basket, Mc Farland, WI. :glasses:  B)
If it wasn't for my BGE I'd have no use for my backyard...

The simple answer is ,for every day cooks Royal oak from Home depot, decent price and if you are a Veteran save 10% . Rockwood for the special low and slows when you want a neutral burn . And never post a question when you want a serious answer on a Friday night .
    Oh yeah ,forget Frontier .

After last nights cook at 6pm I decided to burn off the rest of the Cowboy Lump in the XL at 400, still going strong with a few good sized lumps left.

Sorry man, 49 other states make it easy for us by being cool with just federal compliance.  :(

Still here! Still primarily using Royal Oak. Picked up a couple bags at the Restaurant Store about 2 months ago along with a bag of Laredo. I've only used one bag of RO so far. After opening that bag I had to sort it as it was mostly tiny pieces; the worst bag of RO I've had. This is the first time I bought lump there so I'm not sure if RO was the issue or the way the store handles the product. The bags of RO were on the bottom of the pallet.

The Laredo had a decent mix of pieces; some were rather large. The lump was more dense the RO. I may try another bag of that but will not buy RO from them. I'll buy it from my normal place which is 50 miles away. I tend to get in that area once a month or so while traveling for work.
