Kinda OT: 20 % Discount at Fruita Wood

Dredger
Dredger Posts: 1,468
Just went to order and stock up on wood chunks and discovered that Fruita has a discount code good for the month of October. Ordered some more Texas Post Oak and the 50 pound jumbo box with 10 pounds each of apple, cherry, and pecan and 20 pounds of hickory. Each type of wood is separated in the jumbo U-Pic-Um box. Lots of choices and a good deal. You can request a free bag to store each type of wood in. You can also specify no bark for free. Discount code is facebook20. http://www.fruitawoodchunks.com/

Anyone have any other type of wood chunk recommendations other than the ones listed? I am thinking of pulling together another order while the sale is on.

Nice. I'm running low on oak. I've tried the black cherry, post oak, peach, and pecan from Fruita wood. All are good.

Sister, as you know, smoke is a personal preference. With that said, here are my favorites in descending order.
    Oak
    Southern Pecan
    Cherry
    Apple
    Peach
    Maple
Southern Pine ;) Just kidding sister =)
I never have been real fond of mesquite or hickory.

    Thank you...and not off topic.lol

You already hit my 2 favs with Cherry and Apple. I'm not into heavy smoke so i normally mix the 2, with the Cherry adding some nice color.
    Thank you,

Thanks guys and keep those suggestions coming. @SGH, oddly enough, I had never even heard of mesquite until I spent a year in Dallas. When the guys from the Greenville office would come to Dallas, they would bring us cases of Duke's mayonnaise, which at that time, was not available west of the Mississippi. They would take back cases of mesquite wood and Rosalinda's margarita mix, lol. Same way when any of our staff went to Greenville, we hauled stuff out and brought stuff back. Delta airlines must have thought we were all nuts.

and never mind...just read it isn't an additional shipping charge.  That sure is confusing.

Cherry and apple carry the load for a lot of my cooks.  I use mesquite for steaks and burgers, but the high temp nature of those cooks doesn't really produce much smoke time.

If you experimenting, I use apricot for things like salmon where I want a mild sweet smoke that won't overpower the food.  I find apricot and peach can handle the same roles, so I stopped buying peach.

Thanks for posting the Fruita discount.  They are my go-to supplier for fruit woods.  :)

They also have Alder, which is great for smoking or grilling salmon and trout.   I keep Alder on hand just for cooking fish.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. That alder does look good, but unfortunately, we do not have a good source of fresh fish around here. Wish we did. Still working on my list.

I hate Delta sister. They always fly you into Atlanta. It doesn't matter if you are going to hell, they stop you in Atlanta first. Which is basically hell on earth.

As to the mesquite, I don't care for it at all for smoking. However when burned down to coals and used for grilling, it is par excellent in this capacity. Extremely hot burning which is ideal for grilling.

You're most welcome everyone and thanks for your suggestions. I had never crunched the numbers for the U-Pic-Um packages, but did this time. Basically, it lets you buy the smaller quantities at the large package price so you can try them out. That and the 20 % discount saves a lot. @SGH, I'm beginning to feel like a kid at Christmas waiting on my FedEx delivery, lol. I can't wait to try the maple. I used the Texas Post Oak on a few chickens in the Smoke Vault a couple of weeks ago and the color and flavor were outstanding, so I went on a mission to find different wood flavors.

You're welcome @danv23. I really like the quality of Fruita and Bert is very helpful. With the holidays on the horizon, I wanted to be prepared for a lot of cooking and the discount was just icing on the cake.

I'm not close. However my job is about to wind down in a few weeks. With that said, I'm open to driving up with a trailer. Would love to get some of the Peach as I can't get it in bulk around here. Wil gladly trade you some oak for some of the peach. Again, it will be late December or early January before I could drive up.

I use 1-TPO and 2-Peach on pork but with so many Maple suggestions I'll have to give that a try. And I use their bourbon barrel for brisket.

@SGH, I hear ya. I got bumped from a flight once because they overbooked and they told me not to worry because my luggage would be waiting for me at my destination. I said in a very loud voice "Seriously, you expect me to believe that you know where my luggage will be when you don't even know how many people will fit on your damn airplane????" Sure enough, it took three days for my luggage to show up at the airport. Ok, they sent me a voucher for a free flight that went promptly into the shredder. I have never flown Delta since then. That was the final straw from a long line of goofs on their end. I agree, being from South Carolina, you can't fly anywhere without going through Atlanta. It's like some sort of time warp portal. Oh, and I do like mesquite. Hubby isn't too much of a fan, but we use it on occasion.
