I have it and the adapter for large and mini max. Its not really needed for either egg, even more so on the mini max as you can control temps and only get so much food going. For the large more useful, overnight briskets' etc.

I use my DX2 on my large but don't think it will be that useful on my MiniMax, as I don't do long cooks on it.  But if I change my mind, I'm glad to know that there's an adaptor for it.  Good luck with yours!

I just smoked a chuck roast last weekend on my mini max.  It held 250-75 for over five hours with no problem at all.

  • Recently purchased a BBG Guru DigiQ DX2 and have a question - Is it normal to get a much hotter dome temperature that the temp on the grate from the DigiQ.  So when the cooking temp recommended is 250f do I adjust for a dome reading of 250f or 250f at grate level?
  • Would you have to get a smaller, or less volume fan to drive the MM?

Michael, are you seeing a big temp difference between grate temp and dome temp when not using the BBQ guru?

You can choke the flow down on the dx 2. It has a manually adjustable gate damper.

I have an XL. My dome reads 238F when you grate with PS is at 225F. I have checked that difference and it is real.

@Michael1627 ... It's normal to start out with a much higher dome temp than at the grill level ... maybe 25 to 50 degrees higher.  If you are cooking indirect, make sure the dome thermometer and the pit probe both are protected by a part of the indirect stone.  If you don't, then those devices will read the radiated energy ... kind of like your body get's hotter in the sun than in the shade.  As the cook progresses, those two temperatures will approach each other ... most of the time that is ... since cooking in an egg is based on an organic lump, nothing is guaranteed to be exactly the same every time.

Unless otherwise specified, assume that the posted cooking temp is a dome temperature.  You've also read on the forum not to chase temps ... that +/- 25 degrees is close enough.  With that in mind, you are probably safe to cook at the recipe temp and measure at either location for your first cooks.  Afterwards, adjust the recipe based on your results ... just use the same probe location as your benchmark.

With controllers, some folks clip the pit probe to the stem on the dome thermometer.  That way they don't have to worry about variations in temps between the two measuring devices.  Others believe you should monitor the temp at the protein and clip an inch or so above the grill level.  Again, pick one and stick with it to minimize the variables between cooks.

Pssss ... my advice ... don't be a domer ...measure at the meat!!!

Yep you are correct, I didn't even consider that.

I have been pleasantly surprised at the MiniMax's ease of getting to, and maintaining temperature with the daisy wheel and air input sliding door adjustments only.   On my LG and XL, ive found it nearly impossible to achieve smoking temps without use of Guru and Digi-Q.
  • Get the BBQGuru Probe Tree. Then you can clip to that, it puts your clip more at the level of your meat

Do you have a digiq already?

I would consider a Flame Boss 100 or 200 also.  Both units are simple to use and just plain work.

Don't tell your problems to people.  80% of people don't care and 20% are glad you have them.

  • I have the Digiq, it was a gift. My only comment is be careful to keep the probes away from flame, they are touchy. Make sure they snake in over your plate setter leg or bring them in from the petals.
  • I would like to thank you all for your input.  Leaving Illinois this weekend and heading back,to my Egg in SC for the winter.

Welcome!
