New Egg To Go With My LBGE

Would you get another large for  accessory swapping? A medium? Or a XL to go with my large?

Oh, boy -- expect a bunch of very different answers.

I think it boils down to what sorts of things you cook, and why you want a second Egg.  I have a Medium (because my wife bought me one for my first Egg) and a Large (because sometimes the Medium isn't big enough), and for me, the combination is perfect.  I don't have a bunch of people over very often at all, and firing up both the Medium and the Large has been plenty for me.

But for people who cook for a lot of folks pretty often, a large and an XL might be better.  And of course there are a bunch of folks who have a Large and a Mini, or a MiniMax, because for them, a whole lot of the time they just don't need the Large, and smaller is faster and uses less lump.  And then of course, the folks who have 5 or 6 Eggs...  :)

Bottom line: it really depends on you, and what you tend to cook, and how often.  If you're not already sure you know what you need, maybe just stick with the Large for a while longer and let it become more obvious to you as you keep dealing with some specific need that keeps cropping up that an Egg of a specific size would fix.
  • I don't cook for a lot of people very often, I just see the medium being very efficient and easier to do single cooks (butt, brisket, etc).

I have a medium and I love it for that exact reason it is great for single cooks but it will not take a full-size brisket and even a big pork butt Will hang off at tips it does a great job when you want to cook A few chicken quarters or two or three steaks but if you're looking to add sides or warm up the buns it is too small. It is too small for pizza as an example well at least for me.  So to reiterate I would say it depends what you want to do that you cannot do with your large if it is more elbow room they need an XL. If you feel like the largest too big for those weekday cooks and you just want to do some hamburgers for a couple pieces of chicken in the medium is great

I have a LBGE, if I were to get a second it would be either another large or a medium, or even a cheap kamado like maybe an Akorn. There's just me and Mrs now, the only reason I would want a second would be either side dishes or disparate cooks, like maybe grilling wings on one while doing a pork butt on the other. The second one wouldn't get used much, so a cheap kamado would fill the bill well.

  • I have two Larges and a Mini at the house, a Small in the Motor Home. Just the wife and I now, the Mini gets a lot of the cooks for just the two of us. I don't like the price of the Mini Max and would rather have a Small in a nest because the MM is very heavy. For me the best combo for large cooks is the double Large combo. I gave my Medium to our Daughter and Son-in-law and they wish it was a Large.

I agree with @jstroke: I love my Medium, cook in it a lot, but you'd never get a whole packer brisket in one.  I've never seen a packer in my area, but I've gathered that a certain amount of jury-rigging can be necessary to squeeze one into a Large!  I'll do burgers, steaks, spatchcock chicken, a smaller pork butt, things like that, on my Medium, but a bigger pork butt, ribs, etc., need the Large.  I got a whole rib eye roast ("prime rib") at Costco and cut it into unequal halves, cooked one in the Medium and one in the Large, and it worked out great!
  • For a second "egg", my KJ jr. compliments my large, perfectly.  It gives you a little more cooking space when you need it. It is portable, if you need that, and perfect for cooking burgers, sausage, ABT's, a couple chicken breasts for two people. It also saves you about 200 bucks over a MM, which can be hard to find.  Same warranty too.

Me three.  It also comes with the heat deflector setup, which is nice.  I've added the new KAB (Kick Ash Basket) for the J Jr as my only accessory.

Personally I'd go with the XL to give you the room for large cooks for friends/family.

@mahenryak can you please point me to the exact KAB (model) that fits the KJ jr...?

My wife bought me the XL for my birthday and I purchased the Med.  We do entertain the family often so the XL handles it all.  I bought the medium for everyday cooks for just the two of us.  I love the way it handles the high temp steak cooks.  I am relatively new to eggland, but I have already fallen in love with this style of cooking and for me the XL and Med is the perfect combo.

@Terrebandit it is a very snug fit.  You have to position the KAB  just right, and then yes, it does indeed fit with the heat deflector and raised grill setup that comes with the KJ Jr.  You have the feeling that the frame of the heat deflector may be resting on the KAB handles a bit but it does not affect the height of the grill or anything.  I am very happy with it.

I got a second large so I wouldn't have to buy accessories again. Provided me with the extra space I needed and the ability to have multiple temps going at once. As stated, it really depends on why you need a second egg.

If you keep hangin out here your next question will be "what will compliment my large and ??? ??? Will be your next egg.  Lol.  I cook for 2 of us and occasionally 5-8 people.  I started with a large then added a small and for 2yrs I thought that was the perfect combo until I bought the mini.  The mini is my favorite by far. I use all 3 equally and unless forced I won't give any of them up.  The large is awesome for bigger cooks and using the wok. The small really does a good job for 2 whether it's veggies or protein and the mini is just fast and fun for protein cooks or quick veggie cooks.
