HOW MANY PORK BUTTS CAN I FIT ON MY LARGE GREEN EGG?
Usually buy the 8lb variety. Looking to cook for a large group and curious how many I can fit without adding any attachments to my BGE. Thanks.

BTW, you can make your own raised grid for another level and you'll have no issue fitting 4-5.------------------------------

Possibly 3
XXL #82 out of the first 100, XLGE X 2, LBGE (gave this one to daughter 1.0) , MBGE (now in the hands of iloveagoodyoke daughter 2.0) and lots of toys -
3 THREE only 3 two on the bottom grid and one on the rasied grid. How do I know?? I came close to burning the world down. If you do more than that the grease will overflow the drip pan therefore fueling the fire the hotter the fire more grease, more grease more fire. Do yourself a favor... Cook 3 at a time and vacuum seal, when serving put vac bags in hot water. Trust me on this.Lenoir, N.C.

I've done 30# on the large: 2x10 lb, 2x5 lb. Use a foil-wrapped brick to elevate the middle. I rotated per @sea2ski 's advice.

Well...I plan on doing 4 8 pounders next Sunday and maybe a 5th one. I'll let you know how I did it and how they came out!

If you have a multiple grid setup and are cooking below 275 I'd think you could do 3 on the bottom grid and two up top. If cooking above 275 you will run into the problem that @piney discussed above.I raise my kids, cook and golf. When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.

I do think I have seen 6 8# at once on here. I think it was 3 top 3 bottom. Maybe it might have been 5 8#.

Below are some pictures from a cook I did last year.
I was able to get 4 on the LBGE. I was just doing a partial smoke and then moving on to a slow cooker for a carnitas cook, but I had no issues fitting them on.
You'll note, however, that I did get some charring on the outsides where the meat hung into the 3 platesetter gaps. It was just the edges which I cut off, but I think with some carefully placed tinfoil, you'd be fine.
So, that is with no attachments. If you do a search on the forum you'll find some extremes where folks have at least doubled this on the LBGE...
...and the meat was good.

i've successfully done two 10 pounders on the main grate and another (third) on the raised secondary grate.Richmond and Mathews County, VA. Large BGE, Weber gas, little Weber charcoal. Vintage ManGrates. Little reddish portable kamado that shall remain nameless here. Very Extremely Stable Genius.

To answer my own question, I was able to fit three eight pounders on my grate without having to use a brick. Was tight fit but worked.
-
Did 5 with an extra grid recently.

Three is usually pretty easy. I've been able to squeeze a fourth one in if they're only 6-7#. That's all on the main grate. I try to make a gap in between them though so the smoke and heat can hit all sides.....kinda hard to do that with four.
-
Four. My answer is four. Three on their narrow side with the biggest one on its end in the middle. 38 pounds total.
I admittedly wrapped after 7 hrs at 230 grate temp on the egg, and finished in 250 degree oven (Since I was a little concerned they might not be cooking evenly).
Observation: Faster bark, I assume because the pork was much closer to the inner surface of the BGE than my norm.

just as a “PSA” question for FUTURE newbies reading this thread…
Any chance that you remembered to remove the clip on the thermometer probe on the inside? Bent and broken thermometers are costly.
-
No problems there but you’re right - could have easily been a collision !
