Can I use this applewood for smoking?

Options

My parents have a crab apple tree that is about 35 years old. Last year there was something that started attacking. The tree is full of green leaves but didn't produce one apple this year. Looking at it, it's full of holes. I'm assuming the tree will be dead by next summer. With all of the bugs that are in it or came and went, should I use the wood for smoking? Did the bugs suck all of the sugars from it?

Thanks

Can't answer on the bugs, but a woodpecker had a blast.  Dry it cut it and burn it.

It looks like sap sucker holes instead of insect damage. Thus, the wood is fine for smoking either way.

Sap suckers work over trees like that all the time. I bet this time next year it'll be just as green as it is now.
