Wanted to share the carrier I built for my Mini Egg
firebike
Posts: 39
I use my mini mainly for camping and any place I need a portable grill. I wanted a weather proof carrier because while camping it stays outside all the time. I also wanted it to be light weight and to have shelves. I like having my accessories right there, the table it sits on is small, not alot of room. Also storage in the camper is a premium, so small is key. So I made it with some stuff around the shop, mainly 3/16" aluminum plate. Alot heavier than needed, but it was here and readily available. Add some stainless hardware and here it is. The shelves are 3 position. They lock into place with quick pins and can be adjusted in a few seconds. Position one is folded up for carry, position two the shelves are folded out 90* to allow more ventilation while cooking if need be,and can carried or moved as well. The third position is the shelves opened. Finally got to use the the other night and fired it up, It worked great and cannot wait to get it in the woods.

Nice setup. How heavy?

The whole setup ( if my bathroom scale is correct) is 48.5 lbs. The egg itself is 38. So the carrier adds roughly ten pounds. I know I could save 30% in weight if I would have had 1/8" aluminum. It is surprisingly not that unwieldy with the weight. The handles make it really easy. Just the egg itself feels much heavier due to the fact you have power grab it to move it.

Well done. You could market those.

I like the robot comparison. I thought of naming the carrier the name of the lost in space robot since I watched that when I was a kid. I changed my mind after looking up the name in Wiki. It doesn't roll off the tongue...
- The B-9 Class M-3 General Utility Non-Theorizing Environmental Control Robot was a character in the television series Lost in Space...

Is the mini sitting directly on wood?
-
No it is not sitting on wood. On the bottom of the front plate you can see the four acorn nuts, those are holding four aluminum sqaure tubes that the egg actually sits on. So there is plenty of ventilation for the egg. After I made it, I fired it up while sitting on that table to around 600* and let it go for about an hour tosee how hot the surrounding aluminum got, and wanted to see the amount of heat transfer to the wood below. It was better than expected. The aluminum was barely warm to the touch, and the wood was not hot enough that I could not set my hand on it below the egg at the draft vent. The aluminum had a better effect on heat dissapation than I expected. That table is nothing special, just pine and some poly on top and there was no heat damage at all with the hot cook and the ones after.
-
Cool. can't see the aluminum on the bottom in the pics. I have an egg carten and the aluminum is really good at absorbing the heat I have cooked in the carten sitting on a attic table many times and not melted it. that's a really cool carrier.
