Weirdo here. Prior-Commissioned, retired Air Force.
Officer from 1983 to 1995, stayed in Engineering too long and passed over for Major, started missing it, tried to join the AF Reserves as an Officer, gave up after 2 years and enlisted in the AFR as a Staff Sergeant. Served 14 more years, had a blast, retired at "highest previous rank", Captain.
Still miss it. Badly.

I've met one other guy who went that route, and read about a third. You're right, I know both sides in a unique way...
