Wondering if anybody uses one of these to get their lump going in a Large Egg.  I figured it may get it going faster especially for hot cooks.

I guess for low and slow cooks it may not be good because it would be much easier to overshoot the desired temp

I use a chimney to light my charcoal every time. Works just fine.

If I have a 300 or higher cook planned, I let it go as normal until you see the flames licking out the top of the chimney.  10 minutes.  You'll end up with 3/4 of that thing filled with red hot coals and you'll get the rest of your lump lit as quickly as you need it.  Works great!

When I'm doing a low and slow cook, I don't let it go as long.  Once I confirm that the chimney is really lit on it's own.  (all the newspaper is burnt and the chimney has a steady stream of smoke/sound coming out) I'll dump it in.  That usually just has the bottom layer of coals in the chimney red.

In reality though, I'm not that precise.  I just light the chimney, go do some other prep, and then go, "sh*t! I forgot to dump that thing!"

^^^this is what I do, small fire for low temp, larger burn for higher temp cook.  I use paper towel sprayed with oil to light it.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

It is all I ever use to start my large--If an overnighter , I fill it up and dump it in the center of the egg ( I put a large can , fill my lump around it, remove the can and it leave a hole with I fill with lit lump)

I used to light with a chimney for some time. Then I tried a weedburner and never went back. The chimney method was more tedious.

I use the weber compact version for everything except low and slow. Works like a charm can be up and cooking at high temps in ten or fifteen minutes.

I use a chimney, I used to do oil rags, but tried a chimney and never went back. I use it on all cooks including low and slow.

I remember 20 years ago when a coworker first showed me the chimney lighting method.  He just used a coffee can with holes punched in the lower third of the can.  Put in one piece of newspaper.  Filled the rest with charcoal.  Done!
I was much happier once I saw they were manufacturing versions with handles.  :open_mouth:
