if you want to change the color, go with a coat of stain then at least 2 coats of spar urethane, light sanding between coats. The spar urethane will darken the cedar and make it look really nice bringing out the natural reds/browns, so you may not want to bother with stain I know I wouldnt personally.

If it's going to get daily exposure to the elements--even if it stays covered-- you'll have to use a good marine varnish. No getting around it.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.

I used a product called Ready Seal on the table I just built and it was easy and the finish is nice.

thanks for the help I think I will just go with marine varnish or a spar urethatne

Do yourself a huge favor. Find a Sikkens retailer. Investigate the options you would like to have for the finish, use it exactly as they have instructed, and you will have a nice looking piece of furniture for your egg, that will outlast any other product you will find anywhere on planet earth."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber
