Fire starters...will this work?
itsmce
Posts: 410
Last night's beef ribs produced copious amounts of fat drippings. I read on here recently that someone used paper egg cartons and parafin (I think) as fire starters. Got me thinking...any reason soaking the egg carton sections in the drippings from prior cook wouldn't work as fire starters? Seems to me that would be similar to the paper towel soaked in vegetable oil technique that many use.
Thoughts?

Can't really think why not. Give it a try and let us know.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.____________________Aurora, Ontario, Canada

Just guessing, but it might carry over a smell that you really don't want.John in the Willamette Valley of Oregon

I was thinking that but, I assume that would burn off pretty quickly.jaydub58 said:Just guessing, but it might carry over a smell that you really don't want.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. When camping, I have done it with bacon grease on a paper towel. It saved me one 25 degree morning when I couldn't get the firestarter to catch, but the paper towel with bacon grease lit up very easily.

I've done it with paper towels and it does work, but cooking oil is better (no smell, burns more evenly) and is essentially free since pretty much every kitchen already has it.

Update:
I used this experiment today to start the fire. Worked just fine. I will probably make more the next time I have a bunch of grease from a cook.
