Attaching plastic spring retainers

My Egg has had a growing under bite recently so I wanted to adjust the dome. I actually kept my plastic spring retainers but it simply won't attach. What am I doing wrong!?

Thanks in advance!

I managed to get mine back on once...

heres es what I did to cure the underbite

    1. pull all the inside parts
    2. Tie the top and bottom band together with a plastic zip tie
    3. Loosen every bolt, band and hinge assembly
    4. Align dome where you want it
    5. Run a ratcheting tie down thru top and bottom vent and inside the handle
    6. Tighten down nice and tight
    7. Now retighten all bolt torquing band bolts to spec. Also, bands should be realigned to proper position before final tightening.
    Put it all back together

that has worked for me for a couple of months with minor backslide to small underbite.

    Good luck.

Mine wouldn't go back on either. I ended up using HD zip ties.

The hinge in this position is part of your problem.  Get someone to help keep the band closed and take out the bolts and remove the band and set it flat on a surface and you will see the band go back into correct alignment.  The clips will easily go back on at the point and proceed to reinstall your band.  I just did 2 of these today for customers.  If the hinge manages to fly open (because of spring pressure) simply place on a flat surface and force it back down, and install clips.  Just putting zip ties doesn't get it back into correct alignment.

    Good luck.

if you hold the dome open, you can pry the springs off in a matter of seconds with a screwdriver. then you dont have to deal with those plastic things ;)

I use a crescent wrench adjusted to fit the top part of the hinge from the rear. Once in place you can lift the wrench and it will move the top band hinge assembly forward and then you can get the clips on.

My problem is that I do this and it always go back to about a 1/4" underbite. My OCD tells me to fix it but my past experience says to just leave it alone. =)

Haha, @EggHead_Bubba , it was only 1/4" underbite for me too.  My OCD is intact, for now. :)

I followed a variant of @SMITTYtheSMOKER 's steps and I got the hinge retainers on, thanks!

removing the springs while in the relaxed position is easy! Saves frustration and potential eye damage!

I had to do Like EB said above and I also loosened the band bolts some, then I was able to move the back upper hinge assembly so the plastic piece could also fit over the second bolt head.  I also got the red spacers from the dealer but with a rutland gasket they don't really align as designed since the top has no gasket which throws the symmetry off some.  (and the under or overbite will come back)

My base cracked and the new base had a nomex gasket pre-installed from the factory so I did the same on the top and then the red spacers did their job and my alignment is now very good.

I actually asked the mothership about this one. BGE recommend using the plastic zip ties as already mentioned. Duane from BGE said those plastic pieces usually don't fit back on.

Below are the pics he sent me.

I have the underbite as well. Just can't get rid of it. Since so many people complain about this, there must be something wrong in the construction of the hinge.

Timely topic as I'm having the same problem.

Xiphoid007 I'm glad you got some help from BGE.  A phone call (to voice mail) got no response.  Also, sent an email explaining the problem and included my cell number but still got no response.  Hoping your pix and Jason's post will help me solve the problem.

BGE has't impressed me, yet, with their customer service.

    Thanks!

I couldn't get mine back on either so I just went with the zip ties.
