Four Roses used to suck until it got bought by a Japanese company - they bought back all the rot-gut from the stores and went dark for a while, then released some damn good bourbons.

Blanton's and Noah's Mill.  Even though it is not considered a true bourbon, being it is aged in a port wine barrel for 6 months, I love Angel's Envy.  Nice sweet finish and overall tasty treat.

I always keep knob creek in my liquor cabinet. I guess it's my favorite since I drink it more than anything else.

I am doing the Bourbon Trail next weekend. Anyone know any "must haves" that I should try while down there, which are pretty much local only?
Much of the names are controlled by the more well known. Do the Buffalo Trace tour, (the best in the industry, historical, factual with tastings) and you will see the multitude of names mentioned previously in that facility. If you can wait for the Bourbon Festival held in Bardstown, KY, and do your tour after that, you will know where you will want to go. Cool local event, great music, the best of the best bourbons there for you to sample, and above average event food.
Let me know if I can be of further help.

Love the Colonel E. H. Taylor Small Batch, Single Barrel, and Straight Rye. Woodford Double Oaked is wonderful stuff, but I hate the bottle.

Four Roses Small Batch is another favorite. For some reason, I enjoy their Small Batch more than their Single Barrell.

I am glad I saw this post. I have eyed Bulleit many times but never picked it up. I will definitely get it next time after reading these reviews. I also want to try Woodford double oak. I love Woodford...and many others

  • My best buddy in Danville has been tryin to get me on Basil Hayden's but for some reason, I don't like the peppermint flavor I can taste. He swears I'm crazy and says it isn't there, but I can sure taste it.
I agree that the Four Roses small batch tastes better (to me) than the single barrel, so I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that.

A lot of repeats in there and many very good.  I didn't see Angels Envy as much as I thought.  Really worth a shot. Also for something different, try out Clyde Mays (It's Whiskey, but quite good). Had my first Pappy 20 at the Derby this year. I'm not sure it's worth the price, buts damn good bourbon!

That's like asking what my favorite pizza toppings are - all of them are my favorite ......that said I really have come to like the Four Roses small batch and single barrel, as they don't have a strong oak flavor.

While not technically bourbon I think it is hard to do better than Crown Royal Black Label for an everyday pour. Again, no oak (oak gives me a nasty headache) but still a lovely whiskey flavor. On the rocks with a splash of ginger ale please

Evan Williams Black Label - economical and I love it.  It's on most lists of best value bourbons.   I actually prefer it over high dollar bourbons for mixing.
@nolaegghead  - is that the single barrel?  If so, I had it the other week and was pleasantly surprised.  I plan to have this as my "everyday" pour. :)

    My favorite is still Woodford.

Angel's Envey.  It's made by the same master distillor as Wouldford Reserve except after aging, he puts it port wine barrels.   This stuff is Great!   Can't afford it often, but when I do...............

I picked up the Jefferson's Chef Collaboration - a bourbon/rye blend they worked on with Ed Lee, who is one of my favorite chefs and cookbook authors.  Haven't tried it yet, but looking forward to it.

Agree 1792 is a great one also. Also agree with @Stuckinohio, Basil Hayden is not very good to me. Just an opinion, but to me it's way overpriced and not nearly as good at many cheaper bourbons.

Years ago, Maker's Mark was considered "rock gut" by the local bourbon imbibers. They changed bottle styles and added the wax seal, but kept the same formula. It is now sold as premium pours in most places. I have only known MM as it is, and to me, it is a very good pour.

  • It's all good but my fav is woodford reserve. But my go to on a daily basis is... Wait for it.... Evan Williams. It's a good all rounder, everyday bourbon. It's cheap and I don't mind grabbing it when company asks for a whiskey sour or mixed with coke.

I try try to keep several "good" brands out for myself depending on my mood and for company that enjoys a good bourbon but for a night cap for myself, Evan Williams is not bad for $11.00 in my neighborhood.

Im not a whisky snob, price has nothing to do with it (sometimes it does though).

To me it is way overpriced and simply burns way too much, I drink bourbon on the rocks, not mixed. I agree with @Beavercreek_Smoker that price should have nothing to do with it. You know what you like. My daily is Four Roses, not SB or small batch, just the normal Four Roses. I do really enjoy the SB and Small batch and many other "premium" bourbons but I also always have a bottle of Early Times in the cabinet too.

Rowan's Creek is really good but not always easy to find in GA. I went to the store to get some jack a few weeks ago and a sales lady from a local distiller in Kennesaw talked me into trying a new this new brand so I did. I couldn't wait to get home and try it.  I was happy to support a local startup and she talked it up, comparing to Woodford (1 of my favorites). I tasted and it was terrible. One of the worst bourbons/whiskeys I have tried. I know it is suppose to be made in KY to be a Bourbon but that is how it was labeled. Anyway the name of the distiller is Lazy Guy... Should have known from the name. No real Bourbon flavor. Just alcohol taste. Maybe they should age it longer.

Woodford Double Oaked is my everyday pour. I was lucky enough to score a bottle of PVW 23 in last years release, and am currently enjoying a bottle of MM46 while on a camping/4wheeling trip with the grandkids in NH.
