Remote thermometers

I've had a cheapie Wally World that bit the dust. What is the consensus of the group for a replacement?  Have a Thermo Pen for the final temp but would like something that will monitor both meat and grill temps for me remotely.
Considering a Maverivk 733. Any others I should consider?

Mavericks are the most popular. The Igrill is neat but expensive.

iGrill 2 has the ability for 4 probes. Bluetooth connectivity isn't the greatest.

I think these posts above have nailed the popular units. Some users have had QC/reliability issues with the Maverick units.  i still want one - fair price, battery operated...worth the "risk" I think.   I went all the way with a controller/probes/fan/wifi with the cyberq wifi ( see also the popular Stoker unit), but I wanted dummy proof low and slow 200-225 low/slow temp control/monitoring I could watch from anywhere the house wifi router covered. ( even from iphone in car if i want to set up port forwarding on my router).  I can just use the probes without the temp controlling blower for effectively a high $$ maverick that outputs to a pad/android etc. i do hv to run a power cord to my patio but i think i can rig up a small 12v batt out there to cut the cord if i want..

733 gets you in business for <$60 or so and seems to be reliable. I pop the batteries out of the receiver between cooks as it seems to go thru them fairly quickly if I don't. The food selection option is ridiculous for anyone who has the most minimal BBQ knowledge like the experience of roasting a hot dog or marshmallow over a campfire - have no idea what they were thinking when they came up with that option. Like the universal probes.

Thanks for the replies. Kind of surprised Thermoworks doesn't have a similar unit.

If you're OK with green, the Maverick ET-733 (new version) is currently on sale for $60 at Amazon.  I just picked a set up and will be giving my old Maverick to Dad.

@byrne092 ... the ThermaQ is a good high quality instrument, but doesn't have a remote readout.  That's the main selling feature of the Maverick 732/733 units ... at least for me it is ... well, and the price also.

I'm partial to BBQ Guru's Cyber-Q Wifi.  Set up on it can be a bit technical, but once you get it nailed you can either monitor at home, or even set up email updates on your cook (Although I haven't gotten to that point, yet).  Also, there are a number of mobile apps you can get that will interface with it as well.

As Skiddymarker said, Maverick is a good reliable unit, if you can get past the ridiculous set up. Just set the temp alarms and skip the BS.  Also, don't forget to turn on the alarms, another stupid "feature"

733 is not Bluetooth. 735 is, but I haven't seen many reviews here. Seems like someone has one, maybe they will chime in.

733 advertises 200' range. I've walked to my neighbor across the cul de sac with no issues.

  • I ended up getting the Maverick 733 from slickdeals a couple of months ago when my older maverick went bad.  I'm pretty happy with it and the range is outstanding.  Now that I know how to take care of the probes I expect it to last longer than my other unit.  It took me a little bit to figure out the menu system as I didn't want to have a "meat" selection, just want to know the temps.  Overall I'm happy with it after using 8-9 times now.

I will say that I tested the temp, one probe read 2 deg low and the other 3 deg low.  So check yours, lest you overshoot that $30 filet.

Damn, I didn't even catch that...that makes it seem a little bit more ridiculous. My ET-7 has been going strong for a couple years, no complaints.

I have the thermoworks bluetooth unit.  It is a piece of crap.  The bluetooth range is terrible and the device is unstable.  I worked with their tech support department (they are fantastic) and got a replacement unit that has the same limitations as the first one and other problems...

@paqman ... thanks for the feedback ... would not have thought their stuff would have those type of problems.  I wonder if  like we're not misusing bluetooth for this application.

I have the Maverick 735, which is Bluetooth, it's range is ok (not great)for my setup.  Egg is on the back patio off the kitchen, works fine in the kitchen/living room area.  It works in the bedroom which is in the second floor just over the patio area.  Other rooms of the house or front yard I lose connection.  From my research the iGrill has similar range.  I like the maverick, it has up to 4 diff temps that you can monitor and they have upgraded the probes.  The iPhone app is user friendly.  I went with the maverick as the iGrill was on back order at the time due to a recall they had, not sure what the issue was.  As far as I know there is no wifi unit out there yet.

The iGrill issue was bad probes.

  • I've been really happy with my iGrill mini and new iGrill2. Like other posts the Bluetooth of the iGrill2 isn't the best but I love the proximity feature - when it senses you have approached the nice, bright, red display illuminates..oh and 4 probes! Yea'yah!!
