O.K. ...after the initial Portland thread last week, we decided to head up that way...
As of this moment it looks like three nights in mid May (not enough time, but it's all that "works" this time around).
We've got reservations at Kennedy School (thanks for the tip @BizGreenEgg) and I figure because we will have been driving for about 6 hours we'll just chill there the 1st evening.
The next evening we got tickets for a play at the Gerding Theater. I figure an early dinner at Trattoria Gallo Nero (because it looks good and it's close to the theater), and then after the play a short walk to the Teardrop Lounge for a nightcap or six...
But, what to do and where to have dinner the last day?
Any/all suggestions are appreciated.

Papa Hyden's for dessert is my recommendation.

Sour beer at the Cascade Barrel House! It is one of the best beer bars in the US, and if you are new to sour beer Britnay or one of the other bartenders will walk you through what you need to know.
Also check out Lardo, delicious.
(These are probably about 15-20 min from the Kennedy school but totally worth the drive)
Also, much closer to you.... Pine State Biscuits on Alberta for breakfast/brunch. Breakfast sandwiches on fresh baked biscuits all made in house. To die for!!!
if you need any more info feel free to PM me. Lived out there for a while and love it. I go back at least once a year. -
Portland City Grill. It's located on the 30th floor of the US Bank building. Incredible views plus great food!McKinney, TX

Have a great visit and safe trip. Have stayed at the School a couple of times, always a treat. They were giving out coupons to the other properties they manage in Portland, about 20 of them, no shortage of great pub fare available.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

Awesome to hear you are heading to PDX and staying at Kennedy School. I can guarantee you're going to have a good time. If you're not opposed to a short 10-15 min drive or cab ride, the two places I would put high on the list for an amazing dinner would be Le Pigeon or Tasty N' Sons. If you can't get a reservation at Le Pigeon, you can generally show up at 5ish and sit at the chef's bar (no res required). Both places have other places around them for a tasty beer or cocktail beforehand too - Burnside Brewing across from Le Pigeon; HUB Brewing and Old Lompoc Brewing across from Tasty N Sons. Either way, bring your stretch pants.
You're not too far from Alberta St. either, and that's a great little area to explore. There's a ton of bars/restaurants down that street. Just start walking westward and you're bound to hit something good.
Also, +1 for a Lardo sandwich for lunch.Large BGE & mini stepchild & a KJ Jr.The damp PNW -
O.K. ....you've all made my point! 3 days just ain't enough time!! ...but we're gonna do it anyway
Thank you all for your input. First hand knowledge and suggestions are always the best way to experience someplace new. I have Googled and bookmarked them all.
I noticed that one Pine State Biscuits location is only about a mile from Kennedy School... certainly within walking distance for breakfast. The question is should we? As we were admonished on a trip to New Orleans "just because you can walk there doesn't mean that you should" ... Are there areas that you shouldn't be walking around in, especially after dark? (I assume the Pearl is as safe as the Gaslamp here in San Diego).

Portland is generally a safe town to walk around in. A good rule of thumb is the higher the number cross street the worse the neighborhood. If you get out in to the area know as 'the numbers' be careful (although I can't imagine why you'd end up out there). The areas of the SE, NE, SW, and NW closest to the river are all safe to walk around.

The only places I would even slightly consider "places to avoid at night" would be pretty far east - like SE Portland close to the airport and Gresham, and possibly far NE. Everywhere you are going to be is very safe. Hipsters can't pack heat in their skinny jeans.Large BGE & mini stepchild & a KJ Jr.The damp PNW
