BGE and the Amish

While picking up an order at the BGE dealer Home and Hearth in Zelienople. PA their staff shared with my husband and me that Amish workers had recently painted their buildings.  The Amish workmen didn't turn down any of the samples that were generated off their demonstrator BGEs.  Four Amish families--and more to come--are now using BGEs at home to cook.  The BGE complies with the Amish religious practices and beliefs --so, it is interesting to think of the BGE culture now including the Amish and the Amish embracing the BGE!!

Big question, how do they start the fire?

I'd say they have plenty of practice starting fires.

Guess they won't be joining the forum
  • Actually the BGE is ideally suited for the Amish lifestyle.  Although the families won't have access to this forum, the Amish have their own newspaper and systems of communication that may not be as fast as Twitter, Facebook, or e-mail--yet are amazingly quick.

It will take some time for this to happen but it would be interesting to see an Amish cookbook come out specifically for the BGE!

As to lighting the egg, with the exception of those that are powered by electricity, the Amish do use all kinds of tools.  Depending on the rules of each community which are set by the local Bishop --and they vary from one community to another--the use of propane or butane lighters is possible.  Certainly vegetable oil and paper towels falls within the guidelines of natural fire starting materials.

@Handcyclist nice looking dog there. We had a Shelty and have a Rough Collie now. We've had him about a year and he's great with the kids but he doesn't realize how big he's gotten. And he barks a lot inside the house. Anytime the kids get too rowdy or someone gets down on the floor he barks like crazy. I guess it's the protection/herding instinct. Sorry to go off topic.

The Amish, I'm told, can have electricity for light, heat, etc as long as its solar or generated manually. I could be wrong.

Some good points by @handcyclist about the Amish.  Many of the Amish around here use electricity that is generated by their own generators - either wind powered or fuel powered.  They normally won't use power from the commercial grid.

Meadowcreek BBQ is a local manufacturer and a great supply store for accessories and limited meat (Brisket and pork ribs mostly).  They are also a BGE dealer.  The family that runs it are Amish or Mennonite.  They are great to deal with and help run the local KCBS BBQ event in New Holland, PA.

  • Off topic but thanks!  His name is Toby.  Shelties do bark like crazy--Our son says he barks when a mouse has the hiccups.  He is a therapy dog.  When he has his working jacket on he is as good as gold--silence is golden!!  His herding instincts are 100 per cent ingrained in him.  He loves what comes off the egg!!

I once watched a Amish guy with his horse and buggy roll up to a Hardies and have lunch inside.  I thought it was awesome!

That's nothing new around here. Many stores have tie up spots for buggies - even Costco.

@Handcyclist Did they have the MiniMax at Hearth and Home?

If so, do you recall what it was going for?

  • Yes, Home and Hearth had four delivered when I picked up mine last week.  Mine was ordered and purchased during the 20 per cent off sale held during the Pgh. Home and Garden Show.  Their price on the MM was $649.00.  Figure in the discount and it came out to $510.00.  The sale ended the first week of April.  The BGE dealer in Transfer, PA, north of Hermitage, Sharon,  G & J Fencing is having an eggfest this Saturday April 18th  from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM. They are running a sale during the eggfest.  You could check with them at 724-646-3236.  They had the MM earlier this spring.  Who knows, they may even have a MM demo for sale.

I live very close to "Amish Country" and several of them sell ceramic cookers.  BGE and Grill Dome are readily available from Amish owned business

Personally I would rather know where they park their horses so I could park my car in that area myself! At least I can I dodge stepping on horse **** easier than all the trash thrown on the ground by humans! No wonder sea gulls are a problem 1,500 miles from the ocean. They can eat well in our parking lots!

I bought my egg from a Amish/Minnonite (not sure which) owned fireplace and hearth store in Hopkinsville , KY.  They are an authorizer BGE seller.  They were great to do business with, the owners had a BGE that they also used regularly.
