Transporting a BGE

My wife bought me a large BGE as a combination birthday/Father's Day present. It's a large egg. A friend of hers bough it about 18 months ago and only used it 2 or 3 times. We got it for $500 and it included a plate setter, the rest of a big bag of natural lump charcoal and a cover. The cover actually goes to another grill but it works to keep the BGE protected from the weather. I'm quite pleased with the deal. My question is how do I transport it? I figure I'm just gonna have to take it apart and transport the pieces. I'll probably have to make 2 trips. Not a lot of room in a Prius for a large BGE.
Any advice on transporting the egg?

What kind of vehicle do you have? I have transported my large in the back of my SUV completely intact. If you have a pick-up, either take the internals out or shim them with wood or towels and strap it to tie-down hooks.
-
It's a pain to take it apart but the easiest possibly safest way to move one and you can do it by your self. Also a good way to inspect for any cracks.
-
If you decide to take it apart, take some zip ties and don't forget to strap the bands together, lest you loose some teeth.

Eggcelsior, I think you missed the last line of my post. "Not a lot of room in a Prius for a large BGE."

Find a friend with a truck. Offer food from our BGE.
Remove the insides and tie it down. Besides, you need two people to lift it up into the bed of the truck and remove it when you get home. Don't forget to secure the lid so it doesn't bounce. (Moved mine from the store this way a few years ago when I got my Father's Day gift. I've been showing thanks with good food since.)

Large BGE in a Sole' Gourmet Table

Medium BGE in custom modified off-road nest.

When I bought my first egg it was in the small table at the dealers. I was paranoid I would break it. I live about a mile away so I took my tilt trailer and carefully rolled it onto the trailer and strapped it down.
Last summer I bought my other large. It was in nest. I took it out of the nest and took the internals out and placed the egg in the bed of my truck. I know I shouldn't have done it, but I had my 15 year old son sit in the bed and hold on to the egg for dear life.
We made it home safe. Both son and egg.Louisville, GA - 2 Large BGE's -
I think the front seat idea might work best. This is from @MrCookingNurse
Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
Ahhh. A prius. Now there's your problem.
I've always wondered why so often it's a prius blocking the flow of traffic in the passing lane...
Ball busting aside, congrats on the new egg.Phoenix -

Welcome to the forum! I got my large GBE home in the back of a small car. Take out the fire box and ring along with grate, cap ect and secure them in the trunk, then buckle the exterior in the back in a similar way as shown above.

Seriously, welcome to the forum. Make sure you check out that egg completely for any cracks etc. Her friend can get it replaced under warranty. Once it's yours then no warranty. -
I've taken mine apart and moved it myself. I've kept it whole and moved it myself. Always with my civic. That's my pic up there and that was an easy trip. I used to live close to Memphis and wish I could help you. You can easily loosen the top band, lay the top in your trunk, take the internals out and lay them in your trunk upside down and then lay the base over the internals.
or you can man up and set the whole thing in your front or back seat.

Finally got the BGE moved today. It fit in the Prius with plenty of room to spare.
The stand rode in front of the egg.
I got it all washed out and set up. I just need to glean the grill. I've heard Easy Off works good.

Sorry to bump an old thread. I'm moving from Tampa to the Houston area in about a month. I drive an F150 and saved the box my large BGE in. Right now I plan to put back into box (sort of as the top will be sticking out), put shims in to hold the fire box relatively still, tie down the top, take out the other stuff, and then use cargo straps. Thoughts? Sound legit? I appreciate any advice. I could also give it to the movers and claim it if it breaks but seems to me that's an automatic death sentence. Besides claiming an item through moving companies is easier said than done in my experience. One other point...I have a super cab and also thought I might just put it on the floor in the back seat and stack a bunch of my crap around it but I think that may stink up my truck.Dislocated KC Chiefs Fan in Tampa, FL
