Using Briquets in a BGE

I have only used lump so far in my BGE, but I recently came into possession of a 5 gallon tin bucket full of briquets.
I hate to throw things away, so other than the heavier ash content of briquets, is there any reason I shouldn't use these briquets in my Egg.

I agree with the ash build-up concern. Probably okay on short term cooks but doubt you would be able to sustain a long duration low&slow cook due to air-flow issues. But the BGE shouldn't care otherwise. Fire it up and let us know. Just don't use the lighter fluid method for ignition and if they are Matchlight, I would avoid as well. Don't know for sure but would the briquettes keep burning after you try putting out the fire? Lump stops. Briquettes may not.

They'll burn cooler than lump for sure. might even give you a more even fire. lots more ash for sure. But that's just me going off of my weber bullet days.Ajax, ON Canada(XL BGE, MED BGE, La Caja China #2, and the wife's Napoleon gasser)

Ash is the only issue. They will get hot when you open the vents. Briquettes will snuff no problem, they are much harder to use the second time as they are pretty fragile (Kingsford/Maple Leaf anyway).
I have a Weber and use them all the time. Have only had them in the egg a couple of times when I need a quick cook for burgers or dogs. MBGE - fast cooks only.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad! -
I've mixed lump and briquettes. They burned just fine, but definitely more ash. I'd never use MatchLight in a ceramic though, I'd worry the ceramic would absorb the lighter fluid or whatever they put in those things.Chicago, IL - Large and Small BGE - Weber Gasser and Kettle

Best use of briquettes I have found. Do this every July 4th.

I've used them mixed with lump when I was in a pinch. Worked ok.
