Prepping the backsplash for subway tile.

In 1960, it was ideal to put the outlet directly above the stove.  Never a dull moment during this project.  Thank God for duct tape, don't feel like making another trip to Lowe's.  =)

Hey! Make lemonade out of those lemons. Hole is precut for a pot filler. Now you just need to to the easy part- running a water line!
Lmfao!  Run the faucet out to the stock pot burner...brilliantly awesome!

Took a lunch break from painting, found my accent even though they're not my actual tiles.

Will pick up the stainless sink, cooktop quite nice with white grout.

The left was another option, a little blue with the glass.

The ones pictured are mesh requiring mortar, not the adhesive stick ons.  These sheets can easily be cut to whatever thickness you want, thinking 5".

From what I have gathered, talking to two pro installer buddies, anything stick on, or vinyl, is overpriced junk.  I looked hard at the vinyl tin, and really hard at the Aspect long and short grained SS subway stick ons.  Actual tile rules when it comes to a backsplash.

Tile backsplash looks nice but can be a real PITA to clean.

A previous house of ours had a tile backsplash but we ended up cutting the tile out a bit wider than the cooktop and had a slab of marble put in. It was sealed with something or other (don't remember what exactly) and could be cleaned with a simple/easy wipe of a rag.

We're planning on redoing our kitchen in the next year or so and instead of tile on the walls above the stove and countertops we'll almost assuredly put in some type of solid surface material (not sure which yet).

I'm too old to spend any more of my life cleaning grout lines! :)

If you're getting food on your backsplash and cleaning it often, you're not doing it right.  :)

@heavyg you can get self sealing grouts now that won't stain at all and never have to be sealed. We have them on our floors and back splash and you can pour red wine on it and it wipes right up.

@focker we used these peel and stick sheets that were really easy and are holding up good. The guy that told me about them did subway tiles in his kitchen and they had been up for 3 years at the time and no issues. Nice part is as soon as you are done hanging the tiles you can grout and be done all in the same day. http://m.homedepot.com/p/Custom-Building-Products-SimpleMat-10-sq-ft-Tile-Setting-Mat-SM10R1/202828989

    Thanks @Lit,
I just can't do the adhesives.  The glued backsplash I removed today was barely on, came off so easy.

I worry about the test of time with that adhesive pad product.  Seems too weekend warrior gimmicky to me.  Hope it holds up for ya.

I don't mind waiting a day to grout.

Those small tiles are not always straight on the mesh. My installer had to trim the mesh with a knife and reposition and adhere the tiles back straight. It was a PITA. Make sure you check every single tile before you grout.

I take the "throw the spaghetti against the wall test" seriously! :)

Well, I certainly suggest you never pan fry anything on your stovetop then. Splatter screens on a pan may keep the big drops from popping out but they don't stop that fine aerosolized "grease mist" from wafting around. Probably don't want to do any wok-ing inside then either.

Nooooooo.   Make it stop. I can't see any more tile selections.  I wish I could get rid of all the ads while browsing.   Ads for tile, siding,  exterior doors, and now range hood inserts.  . . That I just learned are referred to as power packs.

I have been updating our fireplace to get rid of the 80's look that my sons says is so outdated...

    Painting brick is a chore!!

Must be a regional thing.  In my neck of the woods people are paying $$ to get rid of the paint and bring back the brick underneath.  looks good though.

which i suppose leads to the question - why would someone even have a fireplace in phoenix?...
