(OT)- Old Fashioned
Does anyone have a great recipe for an Old Fashioned? I can't seem to lock into a mixture I'm satisfied with.

Get quality cherries (not that maraschino crap). Use simple syrup instead of sugar. Use both angostura and peychaud bitters. I prefer rye over bourbon.
Muddle 1 orange wedge and a cherry (luxardos are good) with 1/2 oz simple syrup and one shake of each of the above bitters. Add a splash of soda (optional) and fill glass with ice (or to taste). Top with 2oz rye whiskey of choice (I like knob creek rye) and shake once.

I don't disagree with you Johnny, I lived in Wisconsin and loved the OF's there. I could never make them the same way.

My old fashioned consists of 3oz bourbon 1 splash of angostura bitters, a large orange peel twisted over a large cube or sphere of ice. Not a fan of the sugar mix with my bourbon.
Love these! Very spirit driven...

I lived in the land of The Old Fashioned for 7 glorious years. The standard WI Old Fashioned is made with Brandy, not bourbon. That's what separates Sconny from the civilized world. The state of WI drinks 33% of the brandy on the planet earth. Not kidding.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

@The Cen-Tex Smoker crazy stat! Haven't had it with brandy. Any good? Seems like a better pairing with the sweetness of sugar and cherries.LBGE - Nov/'14A Texan residing in Denver, CO.

I just make a manhattan with bourbon instead. Bourbon 3oz. Sweet vermouth 3/4 oz. angostura bitters, ice, shake and strain into a chilled glass. Top with marinated cherry, or not.
