Mini Green Egg gasket

Hi folks Jeff here from Toronto Canada. I have a medium green egg and love it.

Recently a friend of mine inherited a mini egg. The gasket was toast so he asked if I could help replace it for him. I contacted a number of stores and they all told me that there was only one size gasket for all the egg sizes. So I purchased one. Got home and removed the old gaskets from top and bottom lids. When I went to put the new gasket on I realized they were much bigger width wise then the one that came with the egg. So I ended up folding the excess down on the bottom piece and up on the lid. Has anyone else come across this?

Brother let me give you some good advice. Get a Rutland from RRP. I purchased a Rutland for my large and mini from Ron. His included instructions and tips make life easy. He is a great contributor to this forum as well as a very helpful man.

Location- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

    Status- Standing by.

  • Sounds like you got bad advise from the retailer....  Go with Ron and the Rutland.

Istr Ron saying that he sold the same 5/8" width for all size eggs. I didn't want that for my mini, but the only rutland that is the correct width is a rope, not the flat tape. Been on there for several years now with no sign of problems.

Ron disagrees with me about using the rope. But then, he disagrees with me about lots of things. LOL

Thanks. Yes, as far as I know, they only offer the flat tape in 5/8" width. Every other sold-by-the-foot width they list is described as rope. I don't recall the width I bought, but probably 7/16 or 1/2". More of a hollow tube-like thing than a solid rope structure.

Don't remember what I paid, but I know the 5/8" flat stuff is 79 cents per foot at one of my local hardware stores.

Not to start a p*ssin contest, but I think people need to hear my side why I disagree about using the rope style. Thing is that gasket is actually a tube so what happens is you flatten it and one exterior side gets embedded with the Permatex and is attached to the ceramic base. Then the top part of that “flattened O” is left to move every time the dome is opened and closed meaning it will wear against itself and due to that movement in time it will deteriorate. Instead the flat braided Rutland l gets embedded and stays stationary!

Ron, mine pretty much flattened out and stayed flat. After a short while, I could detect no movement when closing the dome or when pressing on it with my finger. But the only reason I even looked was your comment about it way back when.

In any case, mine has been installed for about four years, far longer than most felt or even nomex gaskets last. Admittedly, my mini hasn't seen nearly as much use as most have. If it has to eventually be replaced due to flexing wear, so be it. The 5/8 ones just seem huge to me.
