Don't throw your metal top on the floor

Apparently it's not completely made of metal.

I also have a massive crack in the side from when I threw it on the floor the first time...

I think it's cast iron, but what quality grade of cast iron?  My cap had frozen to the cover just for a moment as I was taking the cover off.  It released and fell on the deck and shattered.

Its cast iron which is brittle and nonmalleable.  Cast iron breaks relatively easily under tensile stress.  Had a larger part of the daisy wheel hit the ground, the stress wouldve been distributed across a larger area and it probably would not have broken.  You were just unlucky.

Cast iron has no set grain so it can often break if it hits just right.

Forged items keep the grain of the steel in alignment  which makes it difficult to break. It is also more expensive to make a forged item.

  • and it was so pretty and clean too, darn shame. CI can break if you look at it wrong, all depends what it hits. Bouncing off onto the deck or lawn, not a problem, bouncing off onto concrete, big problem.

Before spending try Egging without it. Have 4 Eggs and none have those. The ceramic cap is made to put the fire out (that's all I use).

The "un-forged item" is expensive enough...  So to conclude, it's made of metal.  Rubbish metal.

My dad has also gone through two of the ceramic caps so maybe it's a family thing.

Just google NDT (Nil Ductility Transition Temperature) - you can probably find all kinds of good stuff about cast iron, cold temps, transition zones, charpy testing and the like.  Or..... don't worry - be happy, keep egg'n and buy SS.

  • A smoke ware cap is a fine replacement and I believe cheaper than the original issue daisy wheel.

On the plus side it looks like it is still functional, it just might be a little tricky to lift off without the handle.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

  • I used to use the daisy wheel, but I was nervous about breaking it because I'm klutzy. Then I went without and enjoyed that until it rained. Now I use a Smokeware cap and really like it.

Set the handle vertically and JB it or spot weld it. You could drill a small hole on the top side and hook the handle.

I wonder if this might be replaced by warranty? Otherwise I agree with Henapple and would drill a new hole below the original and you are good to go.

I don't think the warranty will cover rage attacks! Just kidding @MrWigan.

Textbook!  I'll do that.  I do like the drilling idea but I'll just make a mess.

As for why I threw it... why not..? :P  I guess was just excited to be Egg'n again and knocked it onto the patio again
