Disaster struck last night....
Had just finished some wings and was closing the lid when all of a sudden the lid just slammed down...only covered 2/3 of the egg....I couldn't budge it.
Let it sit to cool off overnight...what had happened was the lower ring band had broken apart and part of it had dropped down between the egg & table...I had to disassemble it from the lid in order to get it out...was puzzled on why the ring had apparently corroded in one spot while the rest of the ring was in good shape especially since its been under cover since I've owned it.
I then realized that the location of the corrosion was where I usually placed my pot of vinegar based basting sauce..over time it ate its way thru the ring...

Crazy. I've never seen that happen before. How old is your egg?"The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

I'll bet the vinegar did in the paint, allowing moisture to contact the metal and rust took over from there. You are lucky the dome didn't fall off and bust.Dave - Austin, TX -
The vinegar dripping on the band over the years actually ate the steel....BTW....ordered new bands (comes in a kit)...$170.00

Good thing the dome didn't fall off on someone, like the cook. Time to add "Check the egg" to your Calendar function on the computer, maybe every three or four months.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!
