OT - FLEAS!!!!

Fleas are like cockroaches. They will survive a nuclear blast. We have had a terrible time with them this year. We treat for them, they come back. Today is our third go at them this fall. We bathed the dogs and bombed the house. Right now I'm in my cold garage airing the house out. The family just left and I'm cracking a beer and lighting an egg to stay warm.

Damn fleas are horrible this year. We've never had them this bad. Usually you bathe the dogs and treat the carpets and you're done. Aaaaarrgggghhh!!!!!!

I half expected to see some fleas cooked indirect at 375 degrees over some oak wood ;)

Location- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

    Status- Standing by.

The greatest barrier against all wisdom, the stronghold against knowledge itself, is the single thought, in ones mind, that they already have it all figured out.

  • Sorry to hear that.  Those things are nasty. Had them when we moved into our first house and had a hell of a time getting rid of them.

The fleas would have to beat me to it! It's 31*F with a wind chill of 25*. We have to keep the doors & windows open with the furnace off for the next 80 minutes. I grabbed some old friends to help stay warm. A man needs more friends at a time like this!

  • Bed bugs eat fleas.  If you buy 200 or so bed bugs and turn them loose, your fleas will be gone within 2 days.  Guaranteed.

Lived in a house where a gal got an Irish Setter from a shelter. Poor dog, was literally crawling w. fleas. By the time we got him cleaned up, the 13 cats that hung out around the house were carrying the fleas. Life was hell for a week or so.

Finally found out that fleas hate mint. Bought a couple of ounces of mint oil, and a bunch of spray bottles. Every one went to their bedroom, and began spraying the solution. It was really silly and weird as everyone converged on the front door, spraying the floor as they advanced. There were so many fleas fleeing that there was small cloud of them hopping ahead of the spray.

It worked! But you don't want to know what happens when a cat gets sprayed w. mint water. If looks could kill, we would all have been dead.
  • We're back home, the heat is cranking and I'm drunk as a skunk. I didn't say while we had to be out, we went to Cracker Barrel and I locked the keys in the car! I called a cab & my daughter took it home and retrieved keys to the van & drove back to Cracker Barrel. I wasn't even drinkin' then! Anyway, everything's good and all is right with the world!

Have you gotten the Rx from your vet that you feed to the dog and it prevents the fleas from reproducing? Or maybe it prevents the eggs from hatching.

  • My sister is our vet and she said our going medieval approach should work. I hope so because my MIL is flying here on Wednesday for an extended stay.
