OT: Earl Campbell / A Football Life

Just finished watching the show Earl Campbell / A Football Life. They did one heck of a job telling his story.
I've always considered him one of greatest running back to ever play. The toughest most determined runner I've ever seen. The show does a great job of showing the brutality of football. So physicaly punishing. The pain he endured during and after his career is hard to imagine.

Being a N.O. Saints fan I realize he wasn't in his prime when he played here but I always tell people Earl Campbell surely wasn't the greatest Saints player, but he was without question the greatest football player that ever played for Saints.

 I'm not ashamed to admit while watching the show it choked me up.  You can tell that he is genuine and a good person. His sons especially Tyler are fine young men. Earl's outlook on life is inspirational. I sure hope he continues to improve and enjoy his life.

I highly recommend watching.

    Brother Campbell was one of the all time greats. Truly a elite athlete without question or doubt.

    Thanks for the heads-up.

    Here's what I found:

    A Football Life is the name of the program. The episode is "Earl Campbell" and it comes on again on 11/11/2014 on the NFL channel here in metro Atlanta.

    When I lived in Lubbock I was all about the Earl Campbell hot links.  good stuff and A football life is a good show.

    No question the best running back I ever saw play, and maybe the best football player.  I remember watching him live a few times when he was at UT in the annual Red River Shootout when I was a kid.  Man amongst boys doesn't even begin to describe it.  The thing about Campbell was as big, punishing and hard to bring down as he was, when he got the corner on the defense, no one could catch him, even with an angle.

    When I was playing junior high football, our coaches got ahold of some of his game films from his high school days at Tyler John Tyler.  Not only did he run over the opposition in the running game, but he played middle linebacker on defense and was absolutely dominating.  I still remember him shedding blockers like rag dolls before burying the ball carrier or QB.     

    Sad that he rarely gets mentioned with the real greats of all time due to his short career, but understandable as he took such a beating during his career in Houston as that was pretty much all they had.  Good man too and glad to see him find business success after football, i.e., his sausage empire.

    I stopped watching pro football about halfway through the 1969 season. Just completely lost interest. Never watched another game until 1993. So that means I missed Campbell's entire career! 'Course, he played for the Oilers and the Aints so I probably would have missed most of it anyway. 

    Even now, I don't watch much. But back in the day, for me, it was this guy...

    Loved watching him run over people. You NEVER saw him run around anyone or run out of  bounds to avoid a tackle. Ever. 

    I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

    His time in GB was over just as I was old enough to remember the games the Packers were playing.

    Thanks so much for letting us know.  I've set the DVR to record that show, and the one on Ricky Williams.  Earl played for UT while I was a student there.  Those were EXCITING times!!!

    there aren't any football players like Earl Campbell anymore. Or Walter Payton, or Jim Brown, or Mike Ditka, or Ray Nitchke, or Doug Plank, or Mike Singletary, or Tom Rathman, or Pat Tillman, or **** Butkus, or Larry Csonka, or Jerry Kramer, or Lawrence Taylor, or , well you all get the idea.  There are many more to add to the list, but I am talking about guys who played their guts out and who actually LOVED the game.


    Pro football today isn't football we are used to seeing. It's boring, clinical, and it's not about the game anymore.  it's all about image, optics. Don't misinterpret what I am saying here, the athletes are incredible but the game somewhere in the last 20 or so years lost its heart and soul.  I blame the owners and the structure of the league.  Pro football is legalized profitable socialism.


    I'll take college football over the NFL any day of the week and five times on Sunday.
