Gasket replacement - anyone seen this before?

Took advantage of what's likely to be the last 70 degree day this year in Wisc. To replace my gasket. Found this (the round piece moves as if it was put there to plug a hole.) That's the tip of my pinkie finger in the photo. I'm thinking it's not a big deal, let me know if you think otherwise. image Here's the finished job, thanks Ron, @RPP. I used the @SGH technique of Permatex application (more is better). image Shhhhhh, she's asleep til tomorrow... image

    Not sure what that hole could have been - that's a mystery for sure. As for the excess Permatex at the back I'm glad to see you didn't try to clean it off while wet as it would have smeared. Instead let it cure for the 24 hours and you can shear it off with a sharp blade ulitity knife or EXacto knife.

    Are the photos showing up? I upgraded my IPad software today and this thing is working weird.

    You're good man, pics coming through loud and clear. Weather is crazy, right? Gasket swap looks good; eerily similar to my own XL + Rutland!!!

    Cheers -

    @XC242...

    The plug looks like a patch for porosity in the ceramic...now it should be sealed with permatex and won't move.

    How large of a bead of Permatex did you apply?...I need to do mine as I think we are gonna get snow pretty quick here in Wisc.

    @bcsnave‌ - about a quarter inch or a little less. I probably used about 2/3 - 3/4 of the tube.

    Congrats on the Permatex/Rutland gasket. You will not regret it my friend.

    RRP, question, is "more is better" a good idea?  Twice, I've seen pictures showing permatex penetrating the top layer of the gasket.  I would think ideally you wouldn't want any permatex penetrating to the top.  Shouldn't the top layer of gasket remain flexible?  I'm also not familiar with this orange permatex, how hard does it get when dried?  Is it still soft like RTV, or does it harden to a glass like consistency?

    Personally I prefer to put down a fairly uniform bed of Permatex by "buttering" the entire edge. The Rutland when bunched back into itself as I explain in my replies and instructions has then become thicker and wider and that allows the Permatex to ooze up enough to grip the gasket fibers. I just feel when too much is applied and it comes out the top then once the Permatex has cured in 24 hours it has become hard and not flexible. Of course if you end up later that a length of Rutland comes loose due to too little adhesive then the fix is a simple squirt under the offending area and press it back down. I hope that has answered your question.

    Thanks, exactly what do you mean by "buttering"?  is that like spreading it across the surface of the egg like you would spread butter on bread (just don't use the wife's butter knife).

    I'll let everyone know if there are any issues because of my heavy application of the Permatex. I don't recall @SGH reporting that he's had any. Also, not all that long ago I read somewhere that a guy used only Permatex to create a gasket. I believe it was on an XL.

    That 's fine - that is why I used the word
    Personally to begin my reply. As for person(s) who have made an entire gasket of just Permatex I recall that one and also another who used a Rutland and encased it with Permatex. I didn't mean to upset you - I just know my 10 year old Rutland is still going strong and I applied it in the manner I described.

    @XC242‌
    Thus far mine has worked like a charm. The Permatex is very soft and pliable so the excess has not been a issue at all. We all like to do things our own way, but I'm now convinced that the more the better. The Permatex is a "gasket" it's self. I took the time to fill up all the above holes pictured above with
    Permatex. It has been the best modification I have made to my egg.

    One question, do you run temperature probe wires across your rutland gasket?

    No sir. I don't have a controller or wired thermometer. Guess I'm still stuck in the old days my friend.

    @Zmokin - I know you didn't ask me, but yes I have always run both my Teflon BBQ Guru probe wires as well as my cable covered probe wires out the edge over my Rutland gaskets. The possible air leakage is minuscule!

    Hey Ron, @RPP, didn't mean for my comment earlier today to come across as my being upset about what you wrote. It wasn't meant to be that way, sorry about that. Again, thanks for your help with the gasket - DW. Egg on!

    That's what I've done on my Large.  Layed a heavy bead all around, layed Saran Wrap on top, then gently lowered the lid and let cure.  The Permatex is slightly flexible (like dried caulk) and it forms a perfect seal.
