I'm hanging a chicken too

As soon as I read @SGH 's post about a hung chicken, I wanted to try it. First, I know doing it spatchcock is probably better. Second, I realize this method might not work well in a egg. BUT, I like to screw around and try things for myself. So.. I made this hanger on my lunch break at work ($0.00 invested) and bought a $8.42 chicken. What the hell... It just went on so well see in a bit :-??

Gotta love the creativity-you may want to patent that. Will be waiting for the end results. Now if you can get your rig to go upside down (legs toward the dome) then you will really have it made. I suspect you will be pleasantly surprised with the out-come.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! How much higher can you get it miah?Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ....

Also, it will work. The height is no different than doing a beer can chicken.I think you could take this a step further though. Make the base round so you can put it on the fire ring, then add some cross bars for a drip pan. Any way I look at it...nice work.Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ....

Seriously, I would buy that as an eggcessory. Shut up and take my money.

Actually, if positioned right on the fire ring, your current design should work the way I described above. I would just try to get it a lil higher in the dome.Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ....

Awesome! Can't wait to hear how it turns out.

Yeah Carl I made it so it could fit in like that, (and leave the grate out) but when I was placing it all in the egg my daughter was in full on tantrum mode. I debated crawling in with the chicken.Slumming it in Aiken, SC.

Do you mean the chicken's legs? If so I really didn't know which way to hang it. So I just copied SGH's position.lousubcap said:Gotta love the creativity-you may want to patent that. And thanks for the comments y'allSlumming it in Aiken, SC. -
I don't know what Cap is talking about, but concerning the chicken, typically you want your legs closest to the fire when you hang chicken. However, the egg is a different beast because of the ceramic, so you're actually having more heat on the breasts because they're higher in the dome. See how it comes out, and try it reversed next time.Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ....

Yessir. I'll send my address as well!!

Well. It was awesome.
But. Was it better than a spatchcock? Crap I dunno. I haven't spatchcocked a chicken since the egg was still white. So I guess that needs to happen next to be scientific.
But it was fun. Gimmicky, maybe, but fun.Slumming it in Aiken, SC. -

@Jeremiah

@Jeremiah and @cazzy-you got it-as you know, given the higher in the dome the more the reflective heat, thus the faster cook-time. And the dark meat has to go to 180+ and the breasts 160+, we are all on the same page.And I am sure it was a winner! Enjoy the eats!Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. What if you completed you half arch into a full one...but kind of flat across a section of the top. Could you then hang 2 chickens? Cool looking hanging device you made. Wish I were crafty like that. Great looking bird too.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

Genius! with the right hook(s) the bird can be hung just as easily Kama Sutra style! I was also thinking may be you can also try a direct cook with a small fire, so the legs below will get more heat than the top?canuckland

What if you simply had a t-bar with a cable attached and a hook on the end. Just place the T across the top of the Egg and run the cable down as low or as high as you like. Hang your bird there. Might work with the SS chimney top anyway.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

Very nice. Now come up with a clever name and sell it. "Hangman Chicken" for breasts up, "Diver Chicken" for legs up?Chicago, IL - Large and Small BGE - Weber Gasser and Kettle
