Smokeware Vent

Yesterday we installed the Smokeware vent since it was drizzling. My worry is that the cover that I put on it will cause the top part to fall off when removing the cover and eventually get damaged. Do any of you have a clever solution?

Never had that happen in 2 years now! If it still concerns you then obviously you won't be putting the cover on until it is cold anyway so just pull the cap off before covering.

I cover my egg, but I let it cool down before doing so and then leave the top vent uncapped. I was leaving the ceramic cap on when I covered the egg and it was falling off almost every time I took the cover off.LBGE (still waitin' for my free T-Shirt), DIgiQ DX2 (In Blue, cause it's the fastest), Heavy Duty Kick Ash Basket, Mc Farland, WI.

Never had that happen with either one of my covered eggs.

I have the BGE recent model cover (dark green heavy vinyl embroidered) on my XL and it did lift the SW top when removing the cover. It is a fairly close fit. After the Egg cools down I now remove the top and place it on the table next to the Egg before covering.

OK, thanks for all your responses. I happen to have an ill fitting Weber cover that I use... It's huge. I hate to not put the cover on, since water in the Egg is not a good thing...hopefully there are no cover leaks. So I left the top on, but know I have to be ultra careful removing the cover.XL...Round Rock, TX

In over 2 years of egging; only used the cover once when they were calling for freezing rain... Put the SS smokeware cap on; leave it uncovered and relax.MSV Chill Spot

@hapster I don't know if you get hail there like we do in Austin. We have replaced our roof several times. It may be that it would become damaged even with a cover. In reality, I need to have a covered patio!! I'm hintingXL...Round Rock, TX

I think she is worried about the cap.
Not to get technical, but according to chemistry alcohol is a solution...

I always wait for mine to cool off and than remove it before putting the cover on, otherwise it will pull off when you remove the cover.

A dimpled dome might match the dimples on the surface of the BGE. A bit of a stretch, but that's all I was trying to say. Sorry it offended you...just the same we gt ime serious hail up here in IL as well, but if you inspect the construction of yourSmokeWare cap I believe even a ball peen hammer might dent it long before hail would. -
@RRP it did not offend me...just trying to understand what is being discussed on this page. Wondered if something I said was inaccurate. I must be a nut job, but as a Real Estate Broker, hail concerns me not just the cap, but the egg as well. BGE does not warrant damage due to severe weather. House insurance does not give full replacement value for "stuff", so if a little added protection by putting on the dreaded cover helps, I don't mind...after it all cools off.XL...Round Rock, TX

totally agree. Some of these guys guys have not seen a serious TX hailstorm either. Saw softball size hail kill a cow one time. The last one I personally endured totaled two cars, took out all the windows on one side of my house, a roof (of course) and all my gutters. I'm not sure a cover is going to help IMHO.Dave - Austin, TX -
The cap is pretty soft. I had mine off cleaning it and dropped it on the edge of the top dome and its got a flat spot. Doesnt effect performance but its dinged.Jacksonville FL

I hate hail. Wrecked my new truck last summer and had to have my roof replaced. I just about flip out every time I hear the hail alerts on the radio.Steven

I drive a beater white mini van. While in Wyoming a couple of years ago we got slammed by golf ball sized hail that put little dimples all over my van. Thus, Titleist was born!Flint, Michigan

My cover pulls my smokeware cap off often. Usually it's just caught in the cover, which cushions it a bit. I haven't had any damage. I don't worry about it.
