You will love the Thermapen. It is a must in my opinion. I have the silicone covers as well. They work great. You won't regret buying it. Money well spent my friend.

Has anyone used the Thermapen and the CDN with infrared? If so, which do you like best? I recently purchased the CDN and am just not sure. I guess it has something to do about where the readout is located.

Won't the infrared only provide surface temp? I was looking at those but sometimes simple and proven is better..that's why I elected to go the Thermapen route..

I cant find anyone that ever said the TPen was a bad purchase or not worth the money FWIW

Thermapen is a great cooking tool, but it doesn't take the place of an infra red and IMHO doesn't take the place of a wireless remote thermometer. I have all three and use them a lot, each for different purposes. The infra red is the one I use most, but that takes onto account the workshop, garage, as well as the kitchen and grill. In the kitchen I use it for checking cooking surface and pan/wok temps - not really useful for most food temps. The Thermapen is next most useful because I cook more steaks and burgers than roasts. The wireless remote works best for me for roasts and whole poultry, or remotely monitoring dome temps.

The CDN also has the probe which is used for internals. It wasn't a cost thing but more of instant gratification. I guess I should chaulk this up as learning curve.
