Wood question

I am thinning some smaller trees on my land and have lots of hickory, red and white oak, and silver maple. I am cutting now into fist sized chunks. Question...given the small sizes (read: lots of surface area) how long would you let it dry before using it for smoke? I typically toss a few chunks on top of my lump in the Egg. Thanks

You can use it now, but I would let it dry for 6 months or so.

Not to get technical, but according to chemistry alcohol is a solution...

You can use it green/wet but I like to let it dry for 4-6 weeks.

Once split and kept out of the weather in an area where air can circulate, you are good to go with the sapwood in as little as a month. The heartwood is probably ready anytime you want to use it.

  • Stack it off the ground for air circulation and let it dry or "season" for 6 months per inch if thickness.
