Open box sale has got me real tempted . BUT I am doing real good with the Model RT-301WA-N made by Thermoworks (the same people) . Instead of 2 second read it is 5-6 seconds ,I am dealing with that extra 4 seconds just fine .$20 dollars instead of $95 and just as accurate .

@badinfluence‌ OK, probably not, I did say almost. :D It can help you produce consistent results, and BBQ is just one of many uses. If you ever get into baking its really nice to know what temp your dough is after final mixing/folding. Factor that with what room temp you will be rising/fermenting and you can figure out when it will be ready to proof.

The matter speaks for itself. I'm glad I ordered. With the money I've wasted on cheap ones I could have paid for two of these things.

^^^ This!  Like the Egg itself, wish I'd spent the money 20 years ago.  Great tools are worth the money, by Apple, Lie-Nielsen, Delta, KitchenAid, Henckels, Nikon, Finn, Hewlett-Packard, Le Creuset, etc.
    ;)

Yes, great tools are worth the money, but dont compensate for basic talents at something. Im all about good quality equipment, but where does that quest really need to take me? There has to be a provable value statement when it comes to things like this which no one has proven to me....just subjective (its better cause its better) repsonses. Computerized thermometers didnt even exist a few years ago....I started cooking in the 1970's! Its technology....simply put a more complicated method of doing what used to be, (and still can be ) done simply and effectively. People read and rely too much on the new and whiz-bang and this appears to me to be a perfect example of that. But at the skilled hand, great things can and do come from using non-name brand items. Apple computers DONT make you "compute better" nor will a Henckels knife make your cooking better than meals prepared with an Ecko knife for instance. Tiger Woods can outgolf most of us using just a broomhandle....its not his clubs which make him a talented golfer. Im perfectly happy and capable of producing great meals with my 3.98 thermometer. A digital one isnt gonna make my food taste better, is it? (Devil's advocate). Enjoy your Thermapens....I will continue to produce great food without one.
When I'm not Eggin', I'm scootin'   Eggin' and 'cueing from Temecula Ca; an hour from San Diego, an hour and five minutes from Palm Springs, and an hour and a half from Los Angeles (yeah, right. With THAT traffic?)

I've cooked god food without one all my life, it's the convience factor as much as anything. Plus, I was tired of buying cheap crap that only worked for short periods of time.

From my perspective, it's the accuracy that matters.  It's nice that Thermopens are quick but it's essential that they are accurate.  And they are.

my bad and apology in advance, this is unfounded speculation on my part, just wondering if there was a remote possibility that a Thermapen could have averted the epic butt fail?
