Black Flies?! Thank God I'm far enough south that I don't have to deal with those every Spring! Man, I hate those suckers!!!

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

The last time I was in Maine during black fly season, it was years ago and I was with a buddy camping and fishing on some remote lake up around Calais. We did it every year, but the black flies were the worst we had ever seen. I had a bottle of Deep Woods OFF. He had 100% DEET. Don't remember the brand, but it was in a day glo orange squeeze bottle. I think it was this stuff...

For me, the flies were annoying. For him, misery! Yet he never said a word until we got back home and he showed me some of the bites. They had crawled up his socks and feasted on his legs - a solid 2" wide band of bites just above his socks. Took weeks to stop itching. He said he would never go to Maine again and he hasn't. Instead, he moved to Georgia where, of course, there are no bugs. Hahaha!

I would have been happy to share my OFF. If I ran out, we would have had to paddle the canoe about a mile from the island to the car and then drive 10 miles or so to the nearest store to buy more. But a small price to pay.

as bad as black flies are in maine, atleast theres no southerners
:)) bens is no good for black flies, deep woods is better for mosquitos and works a little on black flies, a drop of bf-100 keeps the black flies away but its not real good on mosquitoes, a sliver of irish spring soap in your buddies pocket also works to keep squeeters and black flies away, well away from you

We use to have a really bad problem with mosquitoes I tried yard sprays, candles, and torches. Then I found Mosquito Authority. They come out every three weeks and spray Pyrethrum. We have regained our backyard I am not affiliated with the company in any way just a satisfied customer

Perhaps you have not heard of Global Insect Swarming? It is a manmade consequence of progress. DEET won't help. The only thing we can do is to impede progress at all costs and tax indiscriminately.

Also, you should abandon the Egg because it makes you vulnerable to the Insect Swarming and your use of it contribute to Global Warming (the solution for that is also to impede progress at all costs and tax indiscriminately).

We could also shoot all the moronic pests, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

I live in Nashville and we got eaten alive my first year.  I have been using a system that works really well for me.  I don't know if you can buy the Mosquito 86 system anymore, but using the attached photos you might be able to re-create something.  Basically it is a tank attached via hose to the end of my leaf blower, so when fluid drips through, it emerges in the center of the high speed air and aerosolizes it.  I use 10% Permethrin in water (30ml-60ml permethrin per gallon).  I will apply it to my yard by "fogging"(full speed on the blower) the bushes/beds and yard, and I will "spray"(blower on idle) under our swing set and in beds with lots of moist mulch.  I repeat after every big rain or about every 4-7 days.  It takes me about 5-10 min to treat my 3/4 of an acre yard.

So, to safety.. (you will have to decide for yourself)
    1) this is the same stuff that you rub on your child's head to treat lice
    2) this concentration is very much more dilute than the lice shampoo
    3) I do not spray the yard with the kids out there, so I let it settle before they go out

I find this works really well for me and I can make my yard mosquito free, but I still have butterflies, fireflies and bees....

I'm really not a fan of man-made chemicals at all. You might find the following helpful. I've posted the repellent section and linked to the rest of the article.... In a 2002 study conducted at the University of Florida's Medical Entomology Laboratory, three plant-based repellents were found to be effective for at least an hour. These were Bite Blocker, which contains soy, coconut and geranium oils (and which now has had citric acid added and is called Bite Blocker Herbal Spray), Repel's Lemon Eucalyptus and Fite Bite Lemon Eucalyptus, both lemon eucalyptus-based lotions. (The study found citronella products, Avon Skin So Soft and wristbands laced with DEET provided protection for only 20 minutes or less.)
