Gasketology...

Howdy all, This will be my first forum post. I wish I had picked a more interesting topic to address, but oh well. I do love this large egg and learning all things eggish. I'm hoping not to become a gear head . I'm prone I think. At this point it's all about the daisy wheel, gaskets, caps, and the new smokeware cap I purchased. Haven't used it yet because I've been reading ad - nauseum about gasket installed on the smokeware cap itself or on the neck of the egg and the performance blah blah blah blah. Actually my daisy wheel works ok and doesn't fall off when opening (although the seal is not super. Egg ceramic cap works well and shuts the egg right off. My thought would be why not just clean off the neck of the egg "squeaky clean" put gaskets on the daisy wheel , the smokeware cap, and the ceramic cap. This would seem to give the best of all worlds. Any thoughts?

That should work. I use a gasket inside my ceramic cap. Keeps it nice and snug.

I put a gasket on the top surface of the top of the egg. Gravity seals.

Suit yourself, but at some time in the future you will have a build of up creosote, grease and yuck on the inside of your dome that will begin to flake off and fall on your food. That is NOT a pretty sight. When that happens you will start asking here and will be told to do a burn out whereby you get your egg rip roaring hot with the vent wide open and no daisy. During that high heat then that gasket you placed on the ceramic neck will begin to melt and you will have a real mess on your hands. If instead the gaskets are placed on the caps then they will be out of harms way - its your call...

Welcome - What @RRP says - IMO the DFMT does not need a gasket at all. Best way to clean the gunk on the DFMT is to put it in a hot egg, if it has a gasket it will be exposed to very high temps.

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  And down the road if you do the "clean burn" remove your thermo so you don't wrap it around on itself.
