Trying the turbo method on my reverse flow upright to see how it compares to turbo on the egg. Wish me luck. If they bomb I will still post pics.

x2.  I am trying to imagine how a vertical smoker could be "reverse flow" (as I understand it).

Custom built reverse flow vertical with mods to the inlet of the cooking chamber and the outlets slightly lowered and restricted to retain more smoke in the box. Was built for me by Pitmaker out of Houston TX.

When I'm done cooking I will snap pics of the said inlet at the top rear and the outlets at the forward bottom and you will understand.

Reverse flow can be right to left, left to right or in the case of a vertical top to bottom. A change in direction of flow of hot flue gas. Any way it goes it's reverse flow when you alter the path of exit beyond its natural draft.

How do you get the hot air to "fall" out the bottom vent? Is it ducted internally? Would love to see the detailed pics once its cooled down.

Yes sir. The outlets are forward and bottom. The inlet is rear at the ceiling of the cooking chamber. The flue has no choice but to flow downward as the unit is literally air tight. Will post pics when cooking is complete. In the mean time look up Backwoods smoker as mine is a copy of there reverse flow design with just some minor altercations.

Just looked it up. Had no idea there was such a thing as reverse flow vertical.

    Thanks! Enjoy the ribs.

Backwoods is the most copied design in the world and the first to bring it to verticals.

The design has still not been improved on since the 80's. Backwoods got it right the first go round.

Pretty cool, I leaned on an offset...always wanted a reverse flow tanker for those 10 pork butt cooks!

If you decide to go with a tanker I would recommend going with a offset firebox with a standard inlet. Why? It can be tuned any way you want with deflector plates and baffled. A reverse flow cannot be. Once the divider plate is installed in a reverse flow it is what it is. There is no toying with temp. This is not a bad thing depending on your cooking needs. But that being said on a trailer mounted rig I would go with a tune able rig as you can dial it in to your needs and specs. Just some food for thought. You notice that Jambos are not reverse flow. They are standard inlet with tuning plates, baffles and heat deflector plates. And they are the most used offset on the comp trail for this reason.

The verdict. The taste of the ribs was no different than turbo ribs off of the egg. My wife and mother in law also agreed that there was no difference in taste. The only difference I could see was the color. Ribs off of the egg are usually a little more "golden" in color in my opinion. I accredit the slightly darker color to the vertical burning wood instead of lump as there appearance is spot on to ribs off of a offset. Thought I would share my results.
