So i'll risk sounding dumb here, but are you talking about cooking already prepared meat on the egg, such as ham or sausage etc. Or are you talking about those who actually do their own preserving?

How exactly do the throw downs around here work?
Basically someone decides on a throw down "theme" which can be a type of meat (e.g. chicken), a specific dish or cut (e.g. wings), or a method of cooking (e.g. cast iron).   A time limit is specified, and people submit their entry by adding a comment with pics.  After the dead line, the most "likes" wins.

I think this was the last one:

Obviously since the votes are just based on pictures and a description (we can't taste the food) it is not a true competition...it is just for fun.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

  • May I suggest.......ATOMIC BUFFALO TURDS??

ABTs would work great.  Just to throw out another suggestion:

This is begging for a throw down!

I actually made that comment in that thread. I'd be in for a burger throwdown. I enjoyed the last ones.

Was still waiting on @Little Steven suggestion from back in Jan 2014, however this went into a stall due to the upcoming Super Bowl last year.

ABT's would be great, might be a little to simple for a throw down though. I would vote burgers between the two expecially due to the recent burger post.

Well, thank you very much for consulting "the idea guy". Since abt's are all going to look pretty much the same in a pic, I don't see how you could really make a judgment. That said I have a killer one and would love to participate. Burgers sort of the same thing but more varieties of ingredients. IMHO opinion the best ones are when an ingredient or a style (Indian, seafood, soups, beef, baked etc) is chosen and the participants can get really creative. Those are the ones where unusual ideas come up. Again, that is just my humble opinion.

On my other vice's site (beer) we have a throwdown competition once a year.  The past few years the competition has been:

Etc. Fish tacos, this past year was a bbq/mexican dinner theme.  Pizza one year.  The deets on it:

Six grilling/bbq enthusiasts have been hand-picked to compete in this competition and contacted independently.  They have been asked to create a themed pizza cooked on the grill.  You will judge them and determine who the winner is based on a themed pizza photo stream they have prepared.  Winner will be sent a box of beer and other items of interest from yours truly and be named the TBS BBQ King for 2013.

    The Objective:
The participants will document the preparation and final presentation of a grilled pizza plate. They will create a photo stream of at least 15 pictures but no more than 35 showcasing the event.  Previous years, Picassa was used but we will move to a different site this year.  The final picture in the stream will be a designed plate with the pizza, at least two sides and one beverage.  The sides and beverage are up to the participant and should be chosen in regards to winning over the judges.

    The Judging:
Anybody and everybody should judge and vote on this competition.  YOU ARE A JUDGE!  Judging is based on the aesthetic presentation of the photo stream.  This is not a popularity contest so please vote on the photo streams only.  Things to consider for the judges when voting are:
    - Composition of photos including detail, sharpness, color balance, lighting, etc.  Blurry pictures are not acceptable.
    - How informative the photo stream was in terms of the process from start to finish.
    - How attractive and desirable the final meal appears.
    - Overall enjoyment of the photo stream.

What Is A California Style "Themed" Pizza?:
California doesn't technically have a style of pizza.  But when one thinks of California pizza, the thoughts of putting ingredients that have no right being on pizza, on pizza.  Anything goes, nothing is sacred.
A "themed" pizza is built by combining ingredients that are reminiscent of another dish, city, time in history, culture, person, etc.  The possibilities are endless.
What is an example of a "themed" pizza?
    - The Buffalo Chicken Pizza - Chicken, hot sauce, blue cheese
    - The Pad Thai Pizza - Shrimp, julienned Thai veggies, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts
    - The California Club Pizza - Turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado.

All of the above examples are dishes that have been transformed into pizzas.  I encourage the participants to dig a bit deeper and come up with more creative themes.

    Specific Rules for Participants:
    - The dough must be created & rolled by hand.  No store bought dough.
    - Any type of grain, flour, etc may be used for the dough.
    - Any type of sauce may be used but it must be created from scratch.  No store bought sauce.
    - Your pizza must include one protein that is grilled, smoked, roasted, rotisseried, etc but must be cooked outdoors.
    - Although not mandatory, it is suggested that your sides match your pizza theme.
    - The pizza's can be any size or shape but must be open faced (no calzones).
    - BBQing mascots such as pets, children and woman wearing skimpy outfits are encouraged in the photos.
    - At least one "complete meal" photo must be used in the photostream and should be placed at the end of the stream.
    - Participants must be the chef of the dish.
    - For consistency and a "level playing field", all participants must use same photo sharing site for the photostream.
    - It has been discussed previously to add a musical background to the photostream.  As long as the six participant vote unanimously to add this feature, I am cool with it.
    - Photostream must be completed by August 25, 2013.  This is a Sunday.  Previous contests have had deadlines on Friday, but history has shown that not everybody checks the site on weekends.  We should get a better turnout for voting this way.
    - Not adhering to the rules will result in an instant disqualification from the contest.

I agree but I called the first one. Deal should be that the winner calls the next one within a certain time period. There should be some rules of some kind, like the stuff should be egged and like that. Once we had to have a picture of a local newspaper in the submission to verify the picture date. With this group it shouldn't be too complicated or require a long attention span to read and comprehend.
