Just saw an ad from Verizon, where you can arm your security system, turn on or off your lights, adjust your thermostat, make sure your kids get home safe, all while you shop at the grocery store. I'll be the guy stuck behind this person in the aisle, while she works her phone, tries to drink her coffee, has her cart on the right side of the aisle while she looks at stuff on the left side. I love technology advancements.

As a full time and charter member, I would like to cordially welcome you to the Old Farts Club.
I like technology as much as the next guy, but there is a time and place for everything. SWMBO has started putting a basket at the front door, when the kids and grandkids arrive for a family get together, all the cell phones - including ours, go into it. Amazing how much better the conversations have become since she put her foot down.
Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!
  • We do the same thing, Skiddy. No grandkids but we encourage it when guests arrive. Now I'm an IT consultant so I'm immersed in the stuff all the time but have been a member of the Old Fart's club for quite awhile. Not all technology is good and there's a time and place for everything. Now, don't get me started on people conducting personal conversations on the cell phone in very public places...always at concert hall volumes!

Along the personal phone conversation lines, I was listening to the radio and they played a segment that had someone sitting next to a person on their cell phone. He was pretending to use his phone and he was basically carrying on the other side of the conversation he was listening to. Needless to say, the people making the calls we're not happy. Their take was how dare he listen in, not that they were intruding on others. Hope the airlines don't allow calls to happen during flights.

  • Eventually I think the FAA will allow calls but leave it to the airlines to do as they see fit. That said, Delta has said "nyet" on calls. I can see any shred of in-flight decorum vanish if voice calls are allowed. Also, on-board wireless revenues will disappear - why pay to connect when you can tether your phone???
