Big Green Egg Flavor Injector (it's broken or I'm stupid)

Drove out to the Seattle Eggfest last weekend and had a great time.  While I was there I bought one of the BGE Flavor Injectors, as my plastic one is starting to look like a gnarled walking stick.

Does anyone have one of these?  If so, how do you keep the needle in?

I attached the needle to the syringe, eased it into my brisket and when I pulled it back out the needle stayed in the meat.  There doesn't seem to be any way to keep the needle in the base of the syringe. It even fell into my marinade a couple of times when I was trying to suck up some juice.

There's the syringe part, then there's a small piece that attaches to it.  Then there's another small piece that sort of screws into the first piece.  Then the needle just slides into that second piece.  (And slides right out again when I turn the injector upside down.)

I tried putting the needle through that second part backwards, but it doesn't fit.  You have to slide it in the end.

Am I being stupid or is my injector defective?

Thanks all.  Happy grilling/smoking!

There are luer lock, compression ferrules and flange styles.  Post a picture, I don't have that exact model but I've seen just about every type of syringe there is having worked in a lab forever.
