Silicone material for 'protecting' the egg from tile table
pflug
Posts: 106
Good evening,
I've made a table for my Large BGE made of cedar with a tile top. I have found that when I roll the table on our paver patio the egg can bump into the tile. I'd like to put something flexible between the egg and the tile, any suggestion that would be heat resistant and not harm the egg.
I did notice around the bottom vent door a clear, high temperature 'silicone-like' material. Could I use something like that? (not to do a continuous bead, but maybe at 6-10 points around the egg. What is that material that is used to seal the vent-door to the egg? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave

How about buying a gasket that is for your egg and just glue it to the inside of the tile? Just a thought...

What about putting a dome gasket around the hole. Then drop the egg in and boom problem solved.

Same idea at the same time. Funny stuff

Silicone or gasket material are both good ideas.

Dow and Red Devil both make temp resistant silicon caulk that would do the trick. There are also automotive gasket material like Permatex that are heat and chemical resistant.
I like the gasket idea if there is still air space left. However, based upon the photo, your hole looks tight and the gasket might completely fill the empty space, eliminating any air circulation. Air is an excellent insulator. Additionally if the gasket causes a snug fit, it will not leave room for thermal expansion & contraction (e.g. cold table on a 30* day and a hot egg).

How about a couple of rags for when you move it. When you are done, take out the rags. I don't have a great answer. My egg hasn't ever been moved.Mark Annville, PA

i used a high temp silicone rubber edge trim on my table. bought it from mcmaster-carr. It's sort of red-orange though, might not work with your nice wood and tile table.

Very good inquiry. Something I will need to think about when building my table. I think I will lean towards using a gasket.

Try the cabinet door shock absorber silicone dots. You can buy them at Home Depot.

I have the same trouble with "egg chatter". I'm afraid the abrasion is going to wear through the paint, moisture enter the clay, and then CRACK! when it gets hot.I think the real answer is a superior designed table nest. One that holds the top heavy egg just below the handle and also bolts down to the shelf of a table. If it's brown, it's cook'in....If it's black, it's done ---my Grandfather Medium BGE
