I'm planning to cook a Turkey on Thanksiving on my XL green egg, but I have never done this.
Has anyone ever cooked a turkey on the green egg? I'm not sure how big of a turkey I can fit on it either.

    If a lot of turkey is what you are after, I would cook two smaller turkeys (11/12lb). I think the smaller are better tasteing. Do you want a spatchcocked (backbone cut out and cooked flat) ordo you want to keep it whole ( like a full round bird).
    Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now).

  • When I saw the title, I thought this thread was about Mickey.

    A full round bird, huh? Man, the possibilities are endless with that one.

    Tenderize by running through the wood chipper, where it also picks up a woody aroma.  Make sure you thaw it out first and take off the plastic wrap.   Oh yah, you betchya!

    Travis, I don't want to bore people with my vacation pictures.  I sent a couple of food porn pics to Mickey.  I'll make a webpage and send you the link.  Don't get your hopes up for great pics, though.

    OK, here's 3 pizza pics.  The first two are from Ostuni, Italy (at the heel of the boot).  Fire brick oven.  The third is from Matera, Italy.  I asked for "pepperoni".  Apparently, pepperoni means "peppers" in Italian.  It was a very good topping, though.  Not a bell pepper.  It was kinda sweet.

    I don't think there is a turkey too big to fit on a XL. However, I would suggest a couple of 12 pound birds and be sure to brine them in advance.

    Villagel Idiot is a modest person (for real). He is an outstanding photographer.

    Yes the pic's from his trip are very good and no way he will just post them, that's just Garys way.

    But, take a look at his Galveston pictures of after the storm, the carvings - they are outstanding.

    Gary that is the very last thing good I will say about you this year :-t

    @swk
    find the mad max turkey, its a good way to cook a tday bird and its very explicit so not many questions. you really want to make a practice bird a week or two before just to gain some experience and it never hurts to have the extra gravey, freeze it and use it on tday.

    @VI
    nice pics of the pies, its always good to see what they are doing with them, very similar to alot of bge pies, maybe a little less cheese

    That's a bummer. I found an old camera in a drawer awhile back and it still had some film in it. Tempted to get it developed, but then again, I have no idea what was on it and it was pre- Mrs.G, so I'll probably never do it.

  • Cant be done - HELP

    I put a 13 pound turkey on my large BGE at 7:30 am.  Pit temp at 300.  It is 2 hours later and the food probe says 178.  no way this can be done in 2 hours.  The turkey has one of those pop up "eyes" which has not popped yet.   am going to wait for the pop up to pop.  Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

  • 13 pounds 4 hours at 300 and done.  Looks amazing.  The "magic eye" popped out the same time the digiq dx reached 180.  Cant believe it is done so early.

    Please toss that pop-up before you do your turkey. I am sure it was done, betting your BGE temp gauge is also off a little. How was it?

    Came out great.  I use the DIGI Q DX to regulate the temp.  Best turkey I have ever had.

    I would have pulled when the breast reached 160, but if it came out good at 180, sweet.
