Does anyone have any reviews on the Weber wireless meat thermometer ($39.99)  vs the Maverick 732  I cant find the Maverick locally but I did find a store that carries the Weber version.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

I have the weber from before I got my egg, or the maverick 732. I had to replace the probe for $20 recently (Probably water in the probe, or used it on a sear before I knew better).
It's a good thermometer, but.... The maverick 732 give you both grill temp, and food temp remotely. The weber that I have (6438 which is a rebrand of the Oregon Scientific AW129), only gives food temp.
Also i like to set the "doneness" alarms not have them pre-programmed. I eat my pork lower than most pre-programmed thermometers.

    Hey Tazcrash,

What did you mean by? "used it on a sear before you knew better"

OK, some folks have said that exposing the cable to direct heat at high temps can shorten the life the of the probe wires (that and getting water in the end of the probe). so now I only really use them on roasts, or smokes (< 425)
If you look at some of the pics people post of food with temp probes they are covered in foil. That can help deflect the heat as well as keeping the wire nice, and looking like new.
Also, now I try to make sure that i position the wire over a plate setter leg so that there is no exposure to direct flame.

I'm sure someone will chime in that they use them at high heat, but if I'm searing, I can use my instant read. For me it's a small price to keep it working longer.

Take a good look at the Weber my brother has one and it uses presets for food temp and won't let you set it manually.  His can't be set high enough for pulled pork.  I have a maverick 732 and love it.  My brother saw mine and wants to get a single probe version of it since he has a traeger and doesn't really need the grill temp.

By the way I live in Canada and ordered my 732 from California off Ebay with free shipping.  You could consider picking one up online.

@tazcrash next time you need a probe you can contact Maverick directly and they will sell both meat and grate probes, as a set, with extended 6ft cables for 30 bucks. I'm pretty sure that price includes shipping.

Thanks brownie, but that probe was for the Weber style thermometer, and unfortunatley not all these probes are interchangeable. Gotta see if the Weber and maverick are.

oops my bad, should have read more carefully
  • Do not buy anything that has preset temps or settings like "med rare". they are a toy and will not serve your purposes to cook on the egg (or anywhere else). Get the maverick if those are your 2 choices.

Great example- The Weber will not go above like 160 for the beef setting but low and slow BBQ goes up to 200. So you are wasting your time with anything that does not measure exact temps
