And, when somebody here seems to go off half cocked, just remember to chill a bit like you do during that half second lock time.
Half second lock time?  There you go, insulting my flintlock.

I bet it is. Can't ignite the powder in the pan, pass it through the touch hole and ignite the main charge in less time. I'll bet you money. are you sure you don't have percussion?

Don't pick on me VI.  Last year the spouse was the Woman's Category State Champion ML and I was runner up in the Men's class for the Florida Muzzle Loading Rifle Association.  My .58 and especially my .36 are just as fast as a percussion lock.  The wife shoots an Ohio Rifle percussion lock .45, and is pretty mean with a dueling pistol.

Now rain or really high humidity, that is another situation.

    Travis, chill out.

Doc, I've never taken part in a competition except for drunken exchanges in deer camp.  But I have killed over 10 deer with my flintlock and several more with my homemade percussion.  I am curious as to how much quicker than a half second you can fire off a flintlock.  Your touch hole must be bored out far beyond what was used in the old days.

I quit hunting over 20 years ago, so my smoke pole has decorated the wall for many years.  (notice the left hand lock)

I'm not picking on you, Doc.  You seem to be very sensitive when people just ask about your methods.  We are all here to learn.

I think we've all been missing jokes for real comments.  I know you weren't picking on me, but I took the opportunity to brag.  Seriously, my flinters are plenty fast.  A combination of good lock, properly placed vent, and the right powder.

A second delay in shot would make it very hard to be accurate.  On the other hand, don't stand to the right of me unless you want your hair on fire from the flash.

Here is a better look at my .58  http://www.palongrifles.com/home/PicturePages/Pics_jenkins.htm

Forgive me. I picked up a bottle of Old Grand dad 114. Its a little more potent than my usual booze.

Wow are we off topic.  OK, a million years ago I got certified in the Breathalyzer.  I got picked from the class to be a test subject, and the instructor gave me $20 to buy the booze of my choice.  I got Old Grand Dad 101.  Got drunk on the clock with it.  Still buy it once in awhile, although I am pretty hooked on Jameson.

Flintrock and gunpowder sounds like a way to start the lump. (back on topic now). Oh, my bad, you said flintlock. I was thinking fire anyway.

Beautiful rifle.  Let me back off from my challenge to you Doc.

When I was shooting, we used black powder.  I used 4F in the pan.  Now, I've heard that black powder is mostly outlawed and stuff like pyrodex and other replica powders are used.  Perhaps, that kind of powder produces a quicker ignition, and therefore, a quicker ignition of the main powder charge.

BP in the lump would be a good way to start the whole house on fire.

Yep, the dominant eye should determine how you should shoot.

Holy cow, Doc.  Who would put black powder in the lump?

Not me.  I have a couple pounds in the garage, right by the front where it can be hauled out quickly.  The family has instructions to tell the fire department right away if there is a fire, and we have not gotten it out.  They ask me what the FD will do, and I tell them, stand across the street and watch the house burn down.

I timed myself on the weekend because of all this elecric stuff. I was 45 seconds to get two large eggs substantially started with my mapp torch. I'm on my third gas bottle in seven years. I cook an average of five nights per week on the eggs. I am nowhere as cheap as stike but with electricity rates as they are I can't see a cheaper method without saving rancid oil and buying the cheapest napkins (paper towels)

Not at all.  Pyrodex and other artificial propellents won't even work in a flintlock because the ignition temperature is too high.  The do work in percussion systems.  I shoot only real black powder, from The Main Powder House http://mainepowderhouse.com/category/black-powder/ .  I also cast my own ball.  I use 3f in all my rifles and use nullb very fine powder in the pan.  The biggest determent to traditional muzzle loading has been the )(&*()^&^%^%$ inlines you can buy for $50 at Walmart, which have much more relation to a single shot cartridge rifle than a sidelock muzzleloader.

If black powder is not under pressure, it will just spew up like a roman candle.  It will only explode when it's under pressure, like a packed ball sitting on top of it in a barrel.  You could also make a pipe bomb very easily with it.

C4 is like that. We catch it on fire to heat our food in the field. You can burn it all day, it will only go boom if you try to step on it to put it out.

I contend that smokeless will just burn, but BP will explode even in a loose pile.  Smokeless needs the buildup of pressure by containment, not BP.  Oh, and the classic movie image of a powder train slowly sizzling along - NOT.  You light a powder train and it better be long because it is going to travel at about the speed of sound.

Well, I guess I'm dead by now.I've burned many a pile of black powder for fun.  It goes up quickly, like *poof*, but it doesn't explode.  Sorry. Been there. Done that.
