Table finished for new large egg...finally.

Hey everybody,

I finally finished the table for my new large egg.  I got busy with work so it took longer than it should have.  I still need to add a few hooks to keep things in place, but it's finished enough to cook on. 

So far, I've only done a pork butt and tri tip, but I'm really happy with the egg.  I've been using a UDS for awhile, but the egg has it beat, hands down.

Thanks for all the tips.  I've already learned a lot from you guys.

Like it!   This is ver similar to mine but one thing you did that I think really helps is that cross member at the bottom of your table where the casters attach.  I think that will add stability.  Good decision.

Oh yea....that table is waaaaaaaayyyyy too close to the pool.  I can just see it roll into the pool.  8-X

Funny you should say that 4Runner.  I don't cook with the egg by the pool.  I was going for the southern california look in the pictures.  As i was turning it around for the picture, it occurred to me how much it would suck if one of the wheels went off the edge.  i'd have to go in after it. 

The cross member on the legs was a little bit of an after thought.  i needed to have casters on the table and i thought adding the cross member would add stability as you said.  it seems to to the trick.

i wanted to use cedar, but had trouble finding any that was decent.  so, i ended up using redwood with granite inset into the top and under the egg.  i finished it with three coats of satin spar varnish.

That is the table I want to make for my XL. What is in between the granit and vertical supports? Just plywood or redwood planks? Is it glued together?

are the plans on paper or just something you threw together?  I am looking at building a table sometime over the winter.  I have may access to some really old barn wood (60+yrs old) that would make a really cool table.

The top is edge grain laminated redwood.  I just ripped some 2 X 6's and glued them up.  Then, I routed out a recessed area for the granite to drop into.  The top is supported by by a 2 X 4 frame and cross members.

The lower shelf is just 2 X 6's supported by the frame and 2 X 4 cross members.  Again, I routed out a recess for the granite.  The granite is only 3/8 of an inch thick.  So, I didn't have to remove much material with router.

I used glue and stainless steel screws to hold it all together.

Onedbguru, I have to give a shout out to the Naked Whiz for his plans.  I studied them a lot and then tweeked them a little before I got going.  He has a ton of information on his page about building an egg table.  If you haven't checked it out yet, you should.

I changed the dimensions some, opted for the solid top, 4 X 4 legs, and the cross members under the legs.  I needed the egg to be moved easily, so I also went with casters on all four legs.  I didn't want the screws to show so I put them in from the bottom and attached the aprons with dowels to cover up all my frame joints. 

A barn wood table sounds awesome.  Make sure to post some pics when you've got it together.

Wow man!!! Great Job. It is real really nice. You should be proud of your work. I made a table the same design and you, and I was feeling pretty good about it till I saw yours.  Do you have any ideas for a nest for a large egg?

As a fellow lefty, I noticed the same thing Squeezy. There's only 10% of us in the world so I'm sure that's why most tables we see are the wrong hand.

Actually, I'm not a lefty.  I set up the egg on the right side because of where i do most of my cooking.  I wanted the work space closer to the patio door because i thought it would be easier to get in and out of the house.  it seems to be working out ok.  Everything is centered on the table so i can always turn the egg around and it will be back on the left side.

Very very nice.  Where did you purchase the wheels?  I am about to begin building a cypress table with a granite top and I am looking for better quality wheels than what Lowes sells.

I got the wheels at Woodcraft.  I've used them for a few garage projects and they work great.  They are a little pricey, This is the first time I've used them outside, so we'll see how they hold up to our harsh southern california winters.

love the table....what height did you end up with (ground to top to table) after you added the casters and bottom 4x4 cross-member? I started with my legs at 32 and now I am worried that my total height is going to be a little high.
