fishlessman said:when i cant find the pearl 1/4 pounders i buy boarshead or the hebrew nationals, those hebrew nationals are too salty for me but if i simmer them a few minutes and then on the egg they are great. those looking for pearls, you need the 1/4 pounders, the thinner ones are just not as good. this is a very old thread

While I like Hebrew National a lot (just finished the last I had on hand yesterday), I like Vienna Beef better but there's only one place I know nearby that sells them. Boar's Head are pretty good to.
My "local" fave is from a place called Drier's. About 25 miles away, but I make the drive every few months to stock up.

Shopsy's---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.____________________Aurora, Ontario, Canada

I have liked Nathan's and some of the others mentioned, BUT 3 years back I got wind that my local BJ had them here in Fl so off I went. I also was told $100 to ship to FL no way. They are not carried anymore at this BJ as there was NO DEMAND. Boo Hoo!Here is a style of eating that AZRP sent me also very good method.

A couple times I ordered Pearls shipped here to IL, but shipping costs became prohibitive and besides they arrived only slightly cool to the touch as the ice packs had melted. They were ok - but not worth the cost.

If you are in Nebraska, the Tom Boy dogs are great. They are the official hot dog of the Cornhuskers and served in their stadium. Also available in grocery stores.

Boars Head is my favorite. They come connected in the pack so you can make a necklace out of them. What's better than that!

The Costco Kirkland brand hot dogs are really good. Much cheaper than the Hebrew national and just about as good.
-
Glad @Lit mentioned the Kirkland dogs. Our Costco stopped carrying the 1/4 b Hebrew Nationals. I was raised on those and didn't realize how salty they were until I tried the Kirkland dogs. They were just as good as HN without all the saltiness.I had Pearl's for the first time last week. They were pretty good but I don't know that I would go out of my way to find them. For now, it's Costco's Kirkland quarter pounders for me - they come in a pack of about 100.But what's the best way to cook them? Will they absorb any smoke or is there no point to using the Egg for hot dogs. Two Large Eggs; Too Little TimeNewtown Square, PA

I like my dogs a little burnt so the egg is great. It does give a little extra flavor. If your someone who just wants them warmed its not gonna do much.
-
This. I often had a HN dog for lunch while working there. When they switched I could barely taste them. Much better as I acclimated to the less salt.Farbuck said:Glad @Lit mentioned the Kirkland dogs. Our Costco stopped carrying the 1/4 b Hebrew Nationals. I forgot all about Jimmy John's. I'll be driving past there in about 15 minutes. If they're open, I'm buying some. Thanks for the reminder. JJ's is terrific. Two Large Eggs; Too Little TimeNewtown Square, PA

I'm a big fan of Boarshead all beef! The natural casings snap with a burst of flavor! If those aren't available I prefer Hebrew National even though I agree they are a bit more salty, what the Hell hot dogs aren't actually health food to begin with, and lets face it...Nobody gets off this ride alive!
