Grid Extender

I'd like to get a grid extender so I can cook enough ribs for 30 people. I saw this one on ebay for around $30. Is this a good buy? Any other suggestions?

I have one and prefer it over the homemade version since this collapses. Just learn to spring the feet so they hook tightly over your existing grill. $30 sounds about right though your dealer should have them in stock.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

I got one from freds music and bbq..the smokin guitar player..Love it..I even use it for pizza to get my stone up in the dome
-
You can build one for under $20.00 with a 17-in. Webber grid and 4 SS bolts

I started with one of those and still use it some. as soon as I had the $$ though I got one of these. if $$ is not to big a deal I would go for this

it works for so many things. -
i would spend the money towards an adjustable rig, it costs more but its more practical. i do have that extender and its not tall enough to stand ribs on end under it. cooking ribs for 30 people you will need to stand the ribs up to get enough in therefukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Fishless, that's what I thought. My rib racks are about 5-6" tall. I guess I could make one myself with 7" bolts but it might be pretty wobbly. What do you guys think?
-
Bob, we have the grid extender and the adjustable rig. We use the AR all the time. I would definitely go with the AR, it's way more versatile and worth the extra money. The customer service at the ceramic grill store is outstanding too.

I agree with Julie. I have both also and use the Adjustable rig quite a lot more than the grid extender.
-
OK guys thanks for the help. I'm going with the AR at the Ceramic Grill Store.
-
IMO, ribs for 30 should be cooked in advance and warmed in the oven.
-
Great choice Bob, I know you will be very happy. Be sure to get the sliding brackets. Those are really nice to have.
-
How many racks of baby backs should I get or should I go with St.Louis or spare ribs?
-
If you cook steaks and can squeeze out a little more milk money, be sure to get the spider also. Very versatile!
-
Many estimate 1/2 rack (6 ribs) per person, depending on male/female mix, what other foods are present and how hungry they are ...
-
I'd go with spares, baby backs have less meat and can quickly go from done to over done because of this. Plus I'm sure everybody wants to EAT! Good Luck!
-
Even cheaper without stainless
hahahaha

And better flavor

when you start cookin the ribs, count me in as one of the 30 people who will be in attendance :P
-
Definitely I'd go with spares. Way more flavor.
Do you have more than one egg? -
this will give you an idea as how to set it up. if i was doing more i would take the fire ring out which would give me more head room. you will be moving these around alot, the rig comes out of the egg in one piece, move/flip the racks and put the assembly back in

I was all set to go out and buy babyback because I love the way they fall off the bone and now you're saying get spareribs :pinch: -
There reaches a point in life where your own opinion trumps all advice. I prefer spares, but lots of folks prefer baby backs.
If there was a right answer, God wouldn't have had the critters evolve both for us. -
If you want to cook enough ribs for 30 people, sounds like you may need to go out and buy another BGE or two.    A grid extender may not be enough, but you could go ahead and buy two sets of everything so you will have close to enough room.
-
I'm sorry about that Mark. I used to like babybacks because I only had spares a few times. There is definitely differnece in flavor. If you've noticed most of the BBQ competitions are won using spares.
-
heres the current record, i would go for it just to hold the new record

Anne, I just ordered the sliding bracket set-up. I have found it is a bit tricky trying to pull out the oval grid. Also, I wanted to have two oval grids so I can actually switch them. I also wanted the grid extender so I could do two grids worth of food higher up in the dome.
Please let me know how you use / like your set up. Thanks. -
I'm thinkin' I'll cook some the day before and some the day of the party. I've also got to cook sides.
-
Spares are generally less expensive too. Therefore, you can serve more people for less money with better tasting food. Wow, spares could be the ultimate party food. Who would have thunk it?
