I got it Tuesday, but wasn't able to use it till tonight. I know, I know, but I have other eggs that I got to use before tonight, so I didn't have to be too impatient. I wanted to be able to take my time and make observations as well, good and bad. First this!!
First the good
Wow, is it small and light. I can take it anywhere.
It doesn't take a lot of lump.
It gets up to heat IN A HURRY!!! In about five minutes it was over 500 and climbing. Shutting the slider stopped it though.
This thing cooks wonderfully. I had a steak tonight that was total perfection. I think the control is easier to maintain than a large.
Now the bad
The hinge drives me crazy. I couldn't get it to come open all the way without moving the Egg.
I don't like the stand at all. That goes along with the hinge. I would open the Egg and it would rock. If I pulled a little it would tilt. Maybe after I use it some it will loosen up. Maybe a shot of WD40 will help?
The cooking grate is a lot smaller than the opening for it, thus it slides around. It needs to be a half inch larger.
Conclusion
I REALLY like it. I may have complaints but I still like it a lot. I asked in an email a few days back about getting either a mini or a small for my dad. The price difference here is $200. Even if the price difference wasn't that large knowing what I do now I would still get him the mini. He will do just fine with this. I'm going to do a chicken to confirm it Monday night, and if that goes without a hitch I'll order it for him on Tuesday.
Thanks everyone for your help. My next thing is finding myself a different stand now. I guess I could set it between my two eggs on my new table but that still wouldn't solve the rocking problem.

And he can walk on water too!

Does he float? :woohoo:

Ron,
It isn't perfect but it is so much fun. You get used to the hinge.

Excellent, Go for the small if stationary, He will love it!.....CJ

I hope so, that's the one thing that has me worried because I can't change it. BGE needs to come out with the same type of hinge that they have for their big eggs for the mini!!!
-
Not that you can tell much from the picture but I'm 6'4". Do you all have any ideas where I could bring the cooking grid up to say four feet? I know, I know, that's pretty high, but that lets me see inside because the lid isn't hinged to open as wide. That would really be a big help for me.
-
Ron,
If you are 6'4", you will probably have to elevate it. Those little cast aluminum bistro tables would be perfect. Me, I have it on the deck and still need a stool.

Yes, I had it on a table tonight, but it's only about a foot off of the ground. I felt like I was looking under my car!!!

Congrats on the new kid! Glad you like it.
-
Thank you, thank you very much. Now he just has to get taller....
-
Congrats. You are going to love it.
I agree with your issues. You just have to get used to it.
That mini really cooks!

TampaHappily egging on my original large BGE since 1996... now the owner of 5 eggs. Call me crazy, everyone else does!
3 Large, 1 Small, 1 well-used Mini -
Congrats on the new Egg! Everyone seams to really like the Mini but have you noticed in pic you look like your standing on water?

Mine with the stand 2 legs facing the front does not wobble when I lift the lid. The hinge for the mini does cause me to say a few words I should not at times. I have to use the tongs to push the hinge to keep the lid open when you use the handle to open the little devil. The handle can get hot also on a 60 to 90 minute whole bird cook.
Some type of small ash remover handle that keeps the wood handle from resting on the outside of the mini.

congratualtions ron,, yes the hinge sucks but you will come to love the mini.. and will be surprised how much you can fit on it.. my sons are cooking on mine when i am not home and the younger one made dinner for us last night.. [see eggless egg burgers post] on the mini..
i asked him what he wanted for dinner and... are you ready ????? HE OFFERED TO MAKE BURGERS ON THE MINI!!!!
my kids are cooking for me so they can use the mini.. that is a testimonial if there ever was one.
let us know what you get for your dad..

Nice critique. I've been fighting the urge to go to my dealer for a mini, but the weather here looks absolutely perfect this weekend and I'm afraid I'm going to cave in if they have one.

Ron....Felicidades!!!!!! ....where is the quilt???? & the pipes???
-
   It's a pool store!!!

I'll figure something out as I did have two legs forward. I did notice that the handle got a might warmish!!

Luke......Luke.......

:woohoo: :woohoo: Obviously you've never tried to wear a wool kilt in Florida in the summer!!! As for the pipes, my personal piper was lighting the large for dinner.
